First of all, thanks to everyone who enjoyed the New York Movie Map, spread the cheer around, and especially ordered one! It went gangbusters over the last week and took my site down three times with all the traffic, so, that was fun.

One thing that struck me while I was working on this thing was how often I’d see the World Trade Center pop up. It made sense, since a whopping 71 out of the 91 movies were released before 9/11, and showing the WTC was just a stock way of saying, “hey, we’re in New York now”. You can probably imagine, though, that each time I saw it I raised an eyebrow. Interestingly, there ain’t a lot of notable scenes that happen there (Snake Plisskin lands a glider on top of one of the towers in Escape from New York, and the 1976 King Kong climbs it, but I had fine alternatives for both), so it wasn’t that tough of a decision to leave the WTC off the map.

There was surprisingly little complaining about movies I screwed up or left out, so I’m pretty pleased with myself, but the most common gripe was that I left out the other boroughs and the upper part of Manhattan. Like I either half-assed it, forgot about, or wanted to take a dump on all the fine folks that don’t live in the exact epicenter of the universe. Look, I grew up in Queens, went to school on E. 94th, and lived out in Brooklyn so I know what it’s like to be neglected by pop media. And that’s just it – blame Hollywood, not me. These roughly 12 square miles of Manhattan is where THEY put everything. If I included all of NYC, or even just upper Manhattan, there’d be a ton of wasted space where relatively little’s happening and it’d reduce the impact. I had to make it work as a visual piece and not just as a reference. So it made sense to focus on where most of the action is concentrated. I don’t think anyone really needs to see it go all the way up to Inwood or down to *cough* Staten Island just for the sake.

If it seems like all the movies you’ve ever seen take place somewhere in New York City, that’s because they do. New York is where the aliens must attack, where landmarks are destroyed, where the world ends, and where good-looking people go to find other good-looking people. It’s practically a law.

This is an illustrated 18″x24″ map of the history of films set in New York – more specifically, all the movies I could cram into a tiny 12-square-mile chunk of Manhattan. There’s exactly 91 movies on here. Can you name them all?

(Edit: Deadline’s over!) I’ll be giving away a FREE copy of this poster to the first person who sends me the names of all the movies, numbered 1-91. This took about 5 months of researching and watching a ton of old movies, and about 3 weeks of drawing. The best movies I watched included The Warriors (on the map), Escape from New York (on), and an old one called A Thousand Clowns (not on). The worst movie I watched was Sex and the City, holy goddamn. I got this idea back in December and just felt like I needed to do it. Now that it’s out of the way I think I can get back on the comics horse, but yeah we’ll just see about that, won’t we. Hey, PREDATORS TRAILER:

If you didn’t know, Predators is the new movie about (I’m guessing) Predators that’s being produced by Robert Rodriguez and coming out in July. Honestly I’m not sure we need more movies about (I’m guessing) Predators, but I won’t be complaining, as long as it’s actually half-decent. The trailer looks like a mashup between Predator and Aliens, which sounds great on paper, so let’s keep our fingers crossed (AGAIN) that it won’t suck in the end (AGAIN). The fact that it’s due out in the middle of the summer, as opposed to, you know, Christmas, could be a good sign.

The fact that most New Yorkers recognize Dr. Zizmor but he remains all but unknown outside of the New York area makes him somewhat of a cultural touchstone for a city whose quirks and idiosyncrasies have often been appropriated by the larger American culture. A bit of schedule news first: I’m finally gonna officially bump my update day to WEDNESDAY, instead of Tuesday, like I should’ve done a long time ago. I need to balance my weeks out better, make ‘em less front-loaded. Have you ever actually heard anyone use the (non-) word irregardless? I mean everyone’s always like, DON’T MAKE THIS COMMON MISTAKE but I’ve never actually seen anyone make that mistake. It reminds me of the Yogi Berra-ism, that place is so crowded no ever goes there anymore.

But hold on, some of you may be saying, irregardless IS a word. No it isn’t, you’re just an idiot. I’m all for so-called nonstandard uses of words or phrases becoming unofficially accepted – I find nothing wrong with the phrase “more unique” (“more fatal”, though… that’s weird) – but when it’s just wrong, it’s wrong. And you’re wrong.

Since I can’t imagine anyone actually using irregardless for real (right??) it’s moot. But you know what, I really hate “I could care less”; if I catch you saying that I will destroy you.

Hey, the new Sega/Rebellion Aliens vs. Predator game is out today. I’ve been asked to do a promotional piece for it (which hopefully you’ll see soon) so I got an advance copy of it (for the PS3) and it’s fun times. If you wanna roll with me online my PSN ID’s aLpbernie.

I’m gonna drop some ULTIMATE KNOWLEDGE on you! We all know “ultimate” means “final”, and we damn sure as hell should know “penultimate” means “next to last”. BUT IT DOESN’T STOP THERE. The word for “third to last” is antepenultimate. And just when you think, can it get any crazier?? The word for “fourth to last” is preantepenultimate.

Unfortunately, as far as I can see, “they” decided to stop there. Which is a shame, really, since one of my favorite things is when language complicobfuscates communication. I wonder why they – I guess the 18th century wordmakers – stopped there? The only thing I can think of is Twitter had an even shorter post limit back then.

As for bi-annual… if you’re confused whether it does mean twice a year, or once every 2 years, that’s because it can mean either. According to that link above, the recommended usage is twice a year… which is exactly the opposite of how I think most people use the more common “bi-monthly” – once every 2 months.

I bet you probably wish you hadn’t read this post now.
