Two weeks in and I'm already worrying that they're gonna grow up too fast. I don't want 'em to ever change. They're so impossibly awesome the way they are, I wanna bang my head against the wall, that's how much I can barely stand their cuteness.
It didn't help that when we were in our pediatrician's waiting room, there was a mom there who said aloud, "Sure, they're cute now, but then they grow up to look like this" - referring to her teenage son sitting next to her, who was wearing black jeans, black sneakers and a black t-shirt with black lettering on a black background. She went on to say right to his face, "You hear that? You were cute once. Then I don't know what happened."
This is along the same lines as the time I reached dining nirvana at Nordic Lodge in Rhode Island - you get unlimited lobsters and filet mignon there - it was easily the best meal I've ever had in my life. However, not too long after I'd had my first bite, I started getting depressed cuz I knew it was all gonna end eventually. I was gonna get full, and I'd have to stop eating. Why is fate so cruel?
This is the kind of paranoid, pre-emptive nostalgia that's tempering my new-parent bliss. In just a few months they're not gonna be as adorably tiny as I want em to stay. I know I'm probably not gonna notice as it's happening but that doesn't make me feel better right now. My 2-week-old chillens is growins so fast. |

Trust me, as the parent of an eight year old, I can tell you that this feeling never stops. Yes they grow up too fast and yes you won't notice it over the long term but it will occasionally hit you all at once. It can be overwhelming at times but just relax and deal with it as best you can. You'll get through it. _________________ Before Elvis there was nothing.

My 11 year old is my baby. She's reaching the "I hate you and you embarass me" phase of childhood.

That and the "I want to live with my mother!" phase are just around the corner for me. _________________ Before Elvis there was nothing.

I'm not a parent, but it's reading stuff like this that makes me apprehensive to be one. I'm kind of sensitive to the whole "circle of life" thing, you know?
It's kind of like that quote Wes Bently's character has from American Beauty: "Sometimes there's so much beauty in the world I feel like I can't take it, like my heart's going to cave in." I can get emotionally wrapped up into things like that so easily, I fear that kind of hurt.
But then again, you can't avoid something wonderful because you fear how it might turn out in the end. Otherwise, what's the point of going outside? _________________ http://www.theaterhopper.com |

Y'know, my baby turns 3 months old on the 30th, and one thing I can say is this: I've made a point of making the best of every moment I've had with her, the spit-ups, the panic attacks, and the smiley-giggly moments. I have, every day, spent as much perfect time with her as I can, and I have made a point of appreciating all of it, locking it away in my memory so I can never say that I wasn't there, and so that I set that standard for myself. So yeah, maybe she'll grow up, but I'll know I did my best and I was there for every moment, when it really mattered, and I didn't miss a thing. So, thanks to that, I don't worry about when she grows up or how quickly she's growing. I gave birth to a dynamic, changing person that I want to learn to be friends with and who I want to share my life with, so the more that we can be together for those changes, the less I worry about those changes pulling her from me or changing her "too much."
Of course, at the same time, the fact that right now she's being baby-sat rather than with me has me totally distracted...
As far as the story about the teenage boy goes, I do think it's a piss-poor attitude that lets someone forget that their child is still just as much theirs and loveable once they learn how to disagree and be ornery. I'm expecting to raise ornery shits, no matter how many kids I have, and I'm looking forward to every hair-raising minute. |

I'm not a parent myself (I'm only 16 lol), but my mom always says that even though I'm basically all (physically) grown up I'll always be her baby girl. Same with my brother (who's 14, but much bigger then me). I guess it never changes, no matter how old they get, or no matter how ridiculous they look lol... I know Mom doesn't like how I dress/look sometimes but she still thinks I'm pretty... _________________ EA . devART . sketchBLOG |

Yeah, they do get big fast, but it has a flip side. I have three babies, 4.5yo, 3yo, and 1.5yo. Every time they go through a difficult stage, I tell myself, "This will only last a little while." That reminds me it's not going to be so hard forever, and that they won't be so little for very long either, so I should cherish this time even when it's frustrating. And then there's always something to look forward to, too. The first smile, the first word, sitting, walking, talking, reading, the first time you find your 1.5yo lying face down across the top of the toilet tank with her head in the sink playing in the water...er wait, that last one should not be a typical milestone.
Anyway, cherish it, remember it, but you'll still be so in love with them no matter how old they are. You'll be frustrated plenty of times, but you don't have to be the mom who doesn't think her teenager is lovable anymore. My crew is quite a zoo most days, but they make me laugh so hard, and they couldn't do that when they were only a few weeks old. Imagine having a three-year-old jumping all over the living room while watching "Riverdance" and yelling, "Mommy! Come dance with us!" It's great. I loved having them be tiny babies, but I wouldn't turn back the clock, either, because they're so fun now. |

| I think my boy is literally growing up too fast. He's 10 months old, walking like a pro, and has now learned to scale the recliner and nose dive off the back. On the flip side, he's doesn't really understand "No," "Stop," or "Cratering Damage" yet, so it's difficult to keep him from doing it. |

This is true, but you know what? They get better, too. We have a 4 week old right now (who is the amazing QUIET BABY!, hardly ever makes any noise) but our five year old daughter is adorable in a different way (usually for the kinds of things she says, although lately she's on a potty humour kick that my wife and I aren't too interested in (it makes her eight year old sister laugh, though). The eight year old is getting into books and stuff, so there's a new area to share, and my son is twelve so he's all into the comics and video games thing (also fun). _________________ chuk |

| Only being 17, I tend to ask girls if they want kids. The answer I usually get is no. Seems weird. |

Also, most girls probably think it's wierd that you're asking them X3 Alot of us like to think about it, yeah, but when guys ask us we're like "O_o" (particuarly if we're dating/not engaged or anything).
But yeah. I think it'd be cool to have kids... if I wasn't married by the time I was 30 though I'd probably end up adopting or whatnot. I wanna do like my mom did and have kids reasonably young, not too much so though.. we got to grow up together a bit which was cool (she had me at 23). _________________ EA . devART . sketchBLOG |

somehow, I managed to circumvent the whole "rebellious teenager" phase of life. personally, I'm pretty sure that it is because "all the cool kids are rebellious" sorta crap that goes on in my school. but then again, "all the cool kids smoke!" so, barring accidents, I can probably outlive them by a good 20 years or so.

Apparently it's a much more typical milestone than I ever thought! That and being suspended for two days from kindergarten.
But yeah, like others have said, each developmental stage they reach they surprise you with something that makes you wish they could always stay just the way they are right now, even if you could have that infant or toddler or preschooler back. When he's 40 I'll still be pinching my son's cheeks, telling him I love him more than I love anyone else in the whole wide world, and that he makes me happy and proud every single day. Just never stop appreciating each and every miracle they present you with. And it takes a very special parent to appreciate a truely inspired temper-tantrum, even as you're "correcting the behavior."
So glad to find a parent's board here, of all places!

But you know what, growing up makes us somehow excited to how they will be in the near future.. They will always look cute as kids but becoming who they are in the future will make a big difference for us because they are our siblings _________________ http://publishingsuccessblog.com/ |
