| Quote: | | [UPDATE] Miami attorney Jack Thompson claims cheat codes make EA's life sim a pedophile's paradise by showing genitalia; calls for ban on T-rated game. |
| Quote: | Thompson is on a roll...and he's not done yet. His latest goat is a game that doesn't involve guns, carjacking, or prostitutes: He's going after Electronic Arts' The Sims 2.
In a manifesto sent today to press outlets, Thompson focuses on dismantling the Entertainment Software Ratings Board and exposing what he calls the industry's "latest dirty little secret." The secret's out now, and it involves nude sims.
In the statement, Thompson says, "Sims 2, the latest version of the Sims video game franchise ... contains, according to video game news sites, full frontal nudity, including nipples, penises, labia, and pubic hair."
The Sims 2 is a "life simulator." In the game, players steer their digital beings around their cyberlives. Actions include everything from the spectacular (getting married, having children, receiving promotions at work) to the mundane (cooking microwaved meals, going to the bathroom, mopping the floor). Such activities, as in real life, sometimes require nudity. EA circumvents inappropriateness by "blurring" out the nether regions, almost to a comical sense. |

I don't think Thompson's ever played Sims 2. All that crap he's talking about are only accessible via user customization and isn't included in anything EA releases. You might as well sue pencil companies because you can use them to draw penises. _________________

Jack Thompson has recently had run-ins with the artists of the webcomics Ctrl+Alt+Del and VG Cats. It's really funny, because it turns out that Thompson is totally fucknuts. I mean, he emails the VG Cats guy and then accuses the VG Cats guy of harassing him, denying that he sent the first email. So the VG Cats guy does a strip in honor of Thompson's crazy. And so does the Ctrlaltdel guy. They're both great.

BAN CHEERIOS OMGWTFBBQ!
...Always nice to find another webcomic geek. Jack Thompson's essentially an idiot because he's only targetting games with sex. And sex doesn't kill people. _________________ I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts... |

Kudos to that. Still, what's the purpose of banning games solely on their implications of sexual content-- It's not as if it's a how-to-guide for the "delicate" minds of our 17 year olds. _________________ I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts... |

That's exactly the problem. The games were on the shelves until the eb0l boobies showed up and then they're adults only. As if the bloody violence and drugs and cursing weren't enough. Personally I think only adults should play those games, but you don't have to remove them from the shelves of EB Games, you just have to check ID before selling them. There's no point at all in making them AO since people under 17 can't buy them anyway.
I just don't understand why sex is the last straw for these wierdos. It seems like of all the stuff that goes on in those games sex is the one to be least concerned about, but that's where our values are now. _________________ The depressing thing about tennis is that no matter how good I get, I'll never be as good as a wall.

Well, it's probably because the mere presence of the letters "AO" are enough to get parents riled up about their poor children's eyes. "Hey, why is this smut only FOUR shelves away from the E games?!"
The ID-ing system is simple yet still the most effective, as opposed to an all-out AO ban. It's just that, no matter what the approach, those games will always find their way into the hands of SOME minor with a neglecting parent or a legal-aged sibling. The lack of games on the shelves would be effective in lessening the chance for parents to purchase it for their children but it would also make it more difficult for legal aged adults to buy it for themselves.
The image of a "Adults Only" videogame store comes to mind, with customers decked out in trenchcoats and sunglasses. _________________ I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts... |

Yeah, it would reduce the number of kids that get ahold of it, no question. My problem is that the ratings system would be perfectly effective if parents were more aware of what their kids were buying. I know you can't always be watching them, but if you're paying attention you're sure to notice them playing it or talking about it or whatever. Plus most of the kids who buy it use their parents' money. It's only right the parents know where their money is going.
Making sure something's properly labelled is one thing, but policing something so that no kids can get ahold of it is really going to far. Even booze and cigarettes are sold in corner stores, and they're right on the shelves, not locked behind glass like games are. Well, at least the booze is.
And again the whole thing was started because of very well hidden sex that you need a hack to get access to. Not because of the drug running or hooker beating or rampant f words or anything like that. Before Hot Coffee there was a lot of complaining but no actual move to control the games.
In ''The Economist" there's a front page article called "Breeding Evil? The real impact of video games." It's sitting at the counters at the bookstore I work at, and I'm amazed at how many people look at it and say, "See, I told you video games cause violence." The thing is the article is very well balanced and researched, and supports the idea that video games do NOT cause violence, but that a combination of lack of parental supervision and mental instability are the true cause. But people just assume. It's a simple case of shifting the blame for negligence onto a scapegoat. Argg. Makes me mad. _________________ The depressing thing about tennis is that no matter how good I get, I'll never be as good as a wall.
