Maybe Abe had a shortcircuit in his brain. Because of the pancakes, y'know? They're covered with maple-y goodness, which is sure to cause aurora spikes. He probably tried to does the flower with juice, and it just wasn't enough, so he ate the flower, thereby ingesting the juice. His green blood cells took the juice to his brain and made a race track. One such cell crashed, making him yell, "MORE JUICE! WE NEED MORE JUICE!" That was when he fainted for 0.037 seconds and somehow thought that Jesus was a god, rather than the son of a god. >.>
So THAT'S where my rant-juice went! _________________ Every second you live is a second you die.-Meh

Personally, I'm getting sick of that "more Juice" line...what was funny at first is now just "same old same old" I guess since I made a comic for the contest, I had to work with it a lot longer than people who didn't work on it, but still, it's getting VERY old. Maybe I needa break from juice, who knows? _________________

With no offense to 5tephe: seeing that I backed a losing horse, I wish I could move my vote to Alison S, because that entry is deserving of more than 1 vote. Let us not forget Bernie's original comment:
| Quote: | | Note that I'm not lookin for GOOD art necessarily; the winner is whatever I LIKE the best, and I like seeing both good, and comically bad, artwork |
I think I'd call Alison's entry refreshingly naive art. It made me smile in the same way 5tephe's "battery-electrodes-to-the-head" interpretation of "juice" did.
Hey, can I give 'em each a half vote?
I also suspect that this is more of a benevolent dictatorship than a democracy, and that Bernie will pick whatever he wants. As well he should. [...although the script contest would suggest otherwise. Congrats, Summer!] _________________ I am not Kaiser Saucy. |

A lot of great and true stuff has already been said about the submissions.
The piece by iocus is my fave: clean artwork, great lines, use of shadow.
Other submissions were hilarious, but this one is powerful in its understated psychology. We all know Abe is a violent alien, and sure, he is likely to react violently to the horrifying image that is the naked Vigoda.
But in this comic, we see the Alien devourer and the Son of God cowering under the table, not daring to surface even for the meager sustenance of cheap bargain aisle juice.
Is it still there?
<shudder>
The horror. |

Okay, congrats to Summer M. on her victory! I edited the initial post with some comments on some of the finalists, including what I really meant by the original "Juice" line...
Summer, lemme know if you want the video game, or the t-shirt!
Thanks for entering/voting everyone......!

Nice one Summer! Congratulations on winning.
But to everyone else, we might actually have lost, but that doesn't make us losers, in a way we're all winners and when you next look in the mirror you can say to yourself "Neon was right. I am a winner, although not in a conventional sense, but in a moral sense." You see, in this crazy topsy turvy world we live in, people just care about getting one up on the guy next to them, obsessed with winning the rat race. But if you win that are you actually a winner? In my opinion, maybe, but either way everyone here should be proud of their entries.
Hail to everyone who entered. You are all winners!*
* Ewwww! But not amateur6! Oh god! oh god! That was just plain wrong! I think I have PTSD from looking at your comic strip! Oh the flashbacks! Make them stop! MAKE THEM STOP!!!!! |

Congratulations to Summer. It did make me laugh. Particularly liked Abe rounding on Jesus to threaten him with the Super-Soaker in the last panel rather than firing again at the screen. Nice touch.
Nonetheless, I would like to point out (A) that I too am indeed not Amateur6, & (B) so striking & iconic is A6's envisioning of The Naked Vigoda that I'd argue it was interpolated BY & INTO Summer's winning entry.
The image on her VDU is clearly an hommage to Amateur6 (although reversed). An immediate shorthand reference so instantly recogniseable that I, for one, totally overlooked this 'borrowing' first time I read it as it effortlessly & subliminally conveyed what we, the beholders, were meant to perceive. I'm sure many other readers will also have failed to notice this instantaneous calling card. Maybe even A6 Hisself.
I put it to you therefore that Amateur's work is still very much in evidence in the winning entry (appearing as it does in TWO of the 3 frames) & as such, deserves recognition.
Furthermore, as an ex-graphic designer, it was very astutely taught to me by an old tutor that great iconography works both large & small, both colour & monochrome. Summer has inadvertantly expertly illustrated this mantra by paraphrasing The Naked Vigoda image in a tiny black stick figure, barely half an inch tall & yet still absolutely 100% recogniseable.
All hail Amateur. Still genius.
That said, & in an effort to convey my impartiality. A6 did also doff his cap to another great piece of arresting imagery in the form of Jesus with a rifle by Jedi Dachshund (not nominated but viewable on page 2 of the aLp ART Contest thread) & I also notice with interest that nobody has abused Cognitive for inflicting a different naked Abe image upon us. Could it be that this is ALSO because everyone merely assumed it was Amateur's image being used yet again..?
Give A6 his props..! |
