I'm always impressed when singers lay it all out there. Sometimes, a wail hits the audience at the right point or serves as a great transition. I approach the art of the wail as follows: A wail is not a lyric (hence, Steven Tyler (Aerosmith) though a great wailer often wails lyrics like in the end of Dream On (SEE BELOW). While I respect this talent, I consider this a bit different because it is a lyric rather than a Howard Dean-esque wail that has no meaning (of note, by my definition, "Yeah or "Yea" doesn't really qualify as a lyric -- rather it is a wail).

For me:

Wails in the song

1. Roger Daltrey (The Who): Won't Get Fooled Again

2. Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden): The Number of the Beast

"Wailer"

1. David Lee Roth (the Van Halen Years): Running with the Devil

Wailer of lyrics:

1. Steven Tyler

What do you consider to be notable wails and wailers in music?

There's the beginning of The Haunted and the end of (Fin*), both by Anberlin.

Also, there's any U2 song where Bono screams "OHH" or "AAAHH," and those also happen to be my favorite ones.

Of the top of my head I say Prince, but that's not really surprising, is it?
I don't have time to elaborate now, but I'll be back to go into more detail later.

Prince? Really? I guess I don't know much by him, aside from Raspberry beret (which, I prefer done by Warren Zevon a la Hindu Love Gods). Examples please, at your convenience.

I'd say Freddie Mercury's got a few...

OK then, let's start with the obvious ones: Darling Nikki (together with the ending of Computer Blue which starts it off) and the earth-shattering finale of The Beautiful Ones. And let's not forget the elephant in the room, which is Purple Rain.
Hell, that whole album features a lot of quality wailing courtesy of the Sexy M.F. He was at his most intense back then.

Sounds like, I should just get the purple rain album. Can't say I've followed too much of Prince -- except for the fact that he rented out Carlos Boozer's (basketball player) when Booz was with the Jazz and did some redecorating...

This is hilarious. I'd love Prince to come by my place and paint his symbol all over my walls. Boozer ain't funk, clearly.

As for owning Purple Rain, I don't see why anyone should not own this record. It's one of these albums, after all.

Robert Plant, from Led Zeppelin's first album, on the track "How Many More Times." I can recall two great wails in this song. One in the opening bars, and one at the end of the long bridge sequence...

"...'cause I got .. you .. in .. the .. sights ...... of my ...... guuuuuuuuuuuuUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUN!!"

On that album, there's also the one in the middle of "Communication Breakdown" that's pretty sweet.

I was just listening to "Mountain Song" by Jane's Addiction. There is definitely an interesting wail in that song.
