So, what movies (and their endless sequels) have you just plain lost interest in? You were following them religiously, and at some point you just stopped caring?
Here's my list, in no particular order:
Terminator: the first two are awesome, and the third one blew donkey balls- I still haven't bothered with Terminator Salvation even today.
Highlander: Each successive sequel makes the one before it look good, no matter how bad the last one was. I stopped with Highlander Endgame, because Spoiler: | the ending negates the first film which started it all! |
Die Hard: Like Terminator, the first two are awesome, and the third one just doesn't pull it off, despite the talents of John McTiernan directing. I would rather not see the fourth one, so I haven't.
Star Wars: Since those prequels also blew donkey balls, I refused to see that animated Clone Wars movie. Thanks, but no thanks George.
Lord of the Rings: I still haven't seen Return of the King, and to be honest, I don't know why. I just can't work up any enthusiasm to make the effort to finish the damn trilogy.
Rush Hour: The first one was passable entertainment, but the second one made me drop my membership to the Jackie Chan Fan Club (true story) I'm sure the third one is a steaming pile.
Aliens/Predator mashups: When I want either, I'll just come here to this site- can't take any more celluloid abominations.

Lord of the Rings? Seriously?
Anyway, my picks. Basically, same as what he said, except for LotR and Die Hard (c'mon it was okay, even it did star the MacDouche alongside the Willis), and I'd like to add...
Indiana Jones. Fuck you George. Just, fuck you.
James Bond: Casino Royale was great. Then Quantum literally was so boring I don't even really remember what it was about I wasn't paying attention. Considering that, really, most of the Bond films were crud, yeah, I'll pass on the next.
Harry Potter: Though this one was kinda dead at the gate since despite being Rowling's first choice, Terry Gilliam never managed to direct any of the films. Lost, fucking, opportunity. Also, each and every film, even when they were great, still had these nagging, obnoxious flaws that detracted from the whole thing. #1 & #2, the obsessive literal adaptation of the plot. #3-#6, Radcliffe's the weakest actor in the films. #7, Emma just wouldn't whip em out. That last complaint was the straw that broke the camel's back for me.
Also, I'd like to note a franchise I have ungiven up on.
Pirates of the Carribean: They're getting rid of those fucking wet blankets. The two best guys in the franchise are facing off against freakin' Lovejoy. I suspect the plot may be balls again but at least it's gonna be a fun film with much glorious scenery chewing.

+1 for giving up on Pirates.
Sadly, the Punisher -- I mean seriously, we've had 3 different actors portray Frank Castle and they've all been "origin" episodes.

Has anyone given up on Resident Evil? 'Cause those are actually pretty entertaining when you have nothing else to do, especially noticing all the small bits from the games they did manage to throw in and do right.
There was also Shrek, which, for some reason or another, I always end up watching anyway. |

Last Shrek movie I saw was the second one, so I guess you can safely say I've given up on it, although I never was that impressed with it to begin with (I'm a Toy Story man all the way - now that's a franchise you'll never want to give up on!)

Don't speak too quickly Sal... Babygirl cfos thinks that, every time we go downstairs, it is to watch Toy Story (we have the 1st). It's been played 4 times in 3 days -- and there are 11 more months in 2011.
Since she is into fish (we got a membership at the local aquarium), I thought to pick her up Finding Nemo. Instead she picked Shrek 4ever After. Seen that 4 times in 3 days.
You may give up on a franchise if you and The Future decide to have a little bass player or drummer (or both) in your family band.

Yes, after I heard they were making the first one.
My picks: Star Wars (I've heard they're making more), Indiana Jones, Spider-Man, Superman and Pirates of the Caribbean.

The first was great. The second is one of my favorite movies. The third, well.
I've heard the reboot has a great cast & crew. I have no idea who any of them are yet, though. |

One of the dudes from Social Network is the new PP. He should be alright, but I've seen some shots already of the the new Spidey costume design - maybe that's my latent homosexuality-based homophobia speaking, but it looks kinda gay.

I forgot to mention Transformers. I gave up on that franchise after watching the first fifteen minutes.

This. Then again I myself had low expectations for this one from the start anyway. As far as I'm concerned, Bay's only good film was The Rock. Mostly because a) it actually inverts Bay's usual Eagleland Fuck Yeah sentiments and b) Sean Fucking Connery.
Oh and I'd like to throw Hercule Poirot into the list. I loved the older series and films but the new ones are... eeeehhhhh... Pretentious and lacking the charm of old series. Now it's all srs bznz and crap. It's just not fun to watch any more.
And Xmen. I wasn't that big a fan of the first two movies but they were fun. Unlike that Massive Waste of My Time that was the third. Then they made Origins and... no I haven't seen it. Not going to, thanks.
I would like to give an honourable mention to The Matrix. No it didn't get better on subsequent viewings. The pretentious bullshit, unrefined and lazy plot, and absolute waste of potential only became more obvious. Why only honourable mention? Cause thankfully the franchise is over and done with. Hopefully.

I said I was un-giving up on. As in, I gave up after the third but the trailer for the fourth has gotten me excited again.

Two thumbs up and high five on that. Also, the kickass score by Hans Zimmer - definitive action movie music as far as I'm concerned.

Wise decision. The second one was really good, improving upon the so-so original in every way. And it had Nightcrawler, who was done better than any other mutant in the movies. The third wasn't atrocious to me, but it sure lacked the skill of the previous director (who instead cooked up the unbelievably boring Superman remake - so we got 2 shitty movies for the price of one).
As for Wolverine - no, just no.

The obvious masterpiece that the original was aside, the bloody Animatrix had incomparably more excitement and vision than both sequels combined.
So I prefer to see these two as the complete franchise and forget about the sequels altogether.
And as for un-giving up on Pirates, well I hope you're not in for a huge disappointment. They didn't seem to have many fresh ideas left in the third one (and first one, for that matter, I'm one of those weirdoes who actually only enjoyed Dead Man's Chest).

She came close at a few points though, which is all the encouragement we need to see the final one. But even adjusting for the lack of bodily goodies, I found the #7 vol. 1 the best so far in the series, but I think I've covered that already elsewhere. In short: Don't give up on HP.
Oh, and I didn't know about Terry Gilliam - you're right about the waste, obviously. Maybe he should be given a chance to re-make all of them now. Because that's what you do, right? Three years after the series' last installment you should already be coming up with a reboot - isn't that right, Stan Lee?
