| I don't think I could ever go to NYC. I've lived in Bum Fuck Alaska my entire life, a huge city like that would kill me. I mean, I almost had a panic attack in Seattle, WA. |

I lived there until i was 16. he moved to Florida... *grumble grumble* I've visited twice, but it was only like 2 or three days each. I was SUPPOSED to visit for a week during the second week of August, but my car was totalled. My summer is now devoted to getting another car. *sigh*
Any suggestions? Not to encourage anyone to go off topic.. _________________ Thank you for flying Church of England. Cake or Death?

My brother has been living in Manhattan for the last, like, 15 years or so (except for 2 years in Brooklyn and 2 years in New Jersey). So I've been a regular visitor to New York over the past 15 years.
I love that city.
Reykjavik (where I lived) and Istanbul (where I would like to live) are my all-time favourite cities, though. Sorry...
And wasn't New York once called New Amsterdam?!? Why'd you change that beautiful name? York sucks _________________ The Justified Ancient of Mu Mu |

My new favorite place in the city is the Lackawanna River Barge just north of Chelsea Piers. This is a large old barge that juts out into the Hudson; several party boats operate from one one side of the barge, and there are historical ships open to the public on the other. It is open all day and late on Thurs Fri nights. It's a nice change from your normal Manhattan madness.
At night, Cafe Del Sol serves food and booze, and there are awesome DJ's. You can take your food & booze on to the upper decks of the lighthouse ship and check out the dance flor and the DJ's from above, and noone is there to give you a hassle. This is truly one of the coolest relatively unknown spots in the city. Check it out. _________________ "When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro."

York is a cool name. Plus its not Dutch <grimace>. I believe it has something to do with those horrible British people and their hegemony over the New World (the part that matters anyway) - for a while at least. That's why you have Ha(a)rlem in NY, because of the Dutch <grimace>. |

This link, while long and winded, explains the Dutch colonization of the New World. At the bottom is a reference to British colonization and how New Amsterdam became New York.
Of course, Peter Stuyvesant was the mayor (governor?) of the area in the 1640s and 1650s. His legacy continues today in Stuyvesant High School, named in his honor. Too bad (that's not a slight on the Dutch. That's a slight on Stuyvesant HS grads). |

What do you mean? Stuyvesant is the top specialized school.
Anyway, my Alma matta Cardozo kicked their ass most of the time anyway. "Science olympiad" sounds so corny.
And we were just a normal high school. _________________ "You have to quote from books to look clever. You can't quote from films. If you quote from films you just look like a geek." |

A number of people on this board went to Hunter College High School and feel that we went to the superior high school.
Also, I'm sure anyone from Bronx Sci or Brooklyn Tech might have the same sentiments about Stuyvesant as I do. |

Stuyvesant is a cigarette brand as well.
And actually, I'm not really a big fan of colonialism. My dad is from Indonesia and they were the colonized, so I tend to look at it from another point of view.
I just think New Amsterdam sounds so much nicer than New York. Think how your skyskrapers would look if they were build entirely in the dutch style!!
So what's your grudge against the dutch, grunt? (that sentence sounds so cool, it could be a Tom Waits lyric!) _________________ The Justified Ancient of Mu Mu |

i was born and raised Upstate in Binghamton. Taking the bus to NYC was a rite of passage/escape throughout my adolescence. I miss it tremendously (now stuck in the south).
The NY connection on here is what got me to register and quit lurking.
If I had my way (and dammit i never do because i am married) then there would be a thread where you New Yorkers would post random shots of the skyline, street, and "wildlife" on here to keep us enraptured. _________________ -Ryan

I missed getting into Bronx Science by just a couple of points. So I was way off for Stuyvesant. My lame ass mom didn't want me in Brooklyn Tech... so I went to a school that was falling apart from the inside out... with metal detectors... good times... _________________ Thank you for flying Church of England. Hey ryan, check out my GFXArtist site, I have plenty of NY shots
http://baconneggs.gfxartist.com/artworks
We can start a photo thread, its just more shots bernie can make use of for his comics.
I was too lazy to commute from Queens(right on border of LI)
Woulda taken 2 hrs everyday each way. And my HS was the top public high school anyway. _________________ "You have to quote from books to look clever. You can't quote from films. If you quote from films you just look like a geek." |
