CONGRATULATIONS TO SUMMER M.!
'Twas close, but in the end, Summer scored a victory in the aLp Art Contest. Congratulations!
-- original finalist announcement:
Argh, this was incredibly tough. I knew it would happen, too, cuz just about everybody put a lotta effort into their entries and thus deserve something. So I narrowed it down to 10 finalists, based on how much I liked them and NOT how skillfully they were done. That was still tough enough. Now I need you to vote for which one should be the winner.
Click here to check out the original entry thread. The eventual winner gets either 1. a free copy of the Predator: Concrete Jungle video game, or 2. a free aLp t-shirt.
Thanks again to everyone who submitted.....
B
1. 5tephe:
This is actually what I originally meant by the "Juice" line; I didn't think it was that obscure. Abe & Jesus were originally going to be using some heavy machinery to battle the evil Abe Vigoda photo. I liked the "SLAP! SLAP! SLAP!" here.
2. Alison S:
This was one of my faves: it looks like it was done by a 5-year-old with finger paint. And the random things on Jesus's head! Beautiful.
3. amateur6:
I can't believe I'm using this word to describe an image of Abe Vigoda naked, but yes, this one is elegant in its simplicity. And a good Photoshop job.
4. cognitive:
The best Photoshoppery in the contest.
5. cycoclops
6. iocus
7. James R
8. Mark H:
9. riff13:
The flashiest entry, but I kinda felt that someone with this much cartooning chops shouldn't be our winner.
10. Summer M:
Probably my favorite, bravo everyone! So much goodness in this one. The sandbag fort, Abe stylin in the shades, and Jesus is adorable.

Wow, this is hard. I don't think there's one there that I don't like, so I have to really think about it. They've all got their own personality. Hmm... _________________ The depressing thing about tennis is that no matter how good I get, I'll never be as good as a wall.

there were about 4 of them on this page i liked... mostly the ones i liked were ones that actually made sense of the text (Which was very hard to figure out without looking at the actual comic). #10 was good, #6 made the best of the dialogue, I liked #10 because it was creative, and I loved #7 because of the randomness (90% of the time, not funny) in it... which is hard to pull off after you know the dialogue..
then there were some bad things about certain ones (I didnt say ALL of the good things, i really only said the things i liked most so you can't tell which ones i'm talking about ) I just did not like..
i might've voted for #3 if the 3rd panel was down a little more, but if it weren't then no one would have noticed why it was so horrible to have that picture in it!!
so no vote for #3 |

Wow! I made it! I'm a contender (as Mark H: entrant No. 8 ).
But before you cast your votes I'd just like to point out that my entry isn't a continuation on Bernie's 'Alien Loves Predator' comic strip, but a statement about our society. It represents the alienation and urban isolation within the quasi-fascist, consumerist Western world, which permeates everything from our religion to the buzzing electrons of our wired, pure cyber-world. It pulls no punches and I'm sure has left may of you questioning not the 'why' but the 'if' of the 'maybe'. If I could sum it all up in one word, it would be 'marzipan'.*
Having said all that I'm going to vote for Alison S because she had the cutest Jesus (awww bless him)
*Note to readers: That's my way of saying "Please vote for someone else, as I'm just pleased I got through to the last 10 and other folks have done a waaaaaaay better job than me." |

I like one, I think it was a very original interpretation of the word 'juice', which made it funnier than the rest.
To the person who actually gave us the naked picture of Abe Vigoda...
You should be SMITED!!!!!
However, 6 and 10 were also quite good. |

I voted for riff13, because LOOK! IT SHINES! IT SHINES with the warm UNDERGLOW of the traffic lit BELLY of a western yemenesian TURKEY as it BATHES in the sea of ETERNAL STUFF! YEAH! STUFF IS COOL!
AND HEY! THERE SHALL BE no more TURKEYS while I am on DUTY! D'you hear?
This began with lettuce, and it's going to end with lettuce.

I'm a recent convert to ALP & this is my first post. I joined because I felt I needed to vote. I used the only criterion that ever made any sense to me in terms of judging any visual aesthetic (in as much as any human can ever judge another's creative endeavours) & that is this:
What image will remain with you after all others have faded?
By that rational, & by some considerable margin I'd argue, Amateur 6 is the clear winner. Whilst all the others have their individual merits, some for artistic flare, others for unusual interpretation of the now-infamous "juice" line, only Amateur 6 really got the visceral indelibilty of the joke; an image which, once seen, can never be forgotten.
A near immortal image, which is not only the entire point of the strip but also surely, the whole point of art..?
Pure genius. Vote Amateur 6.
PS: I personally have my own take on the "Juice" line & perhaps someday, just for fun, I will post my interpretation but I was wondering Bernie whether, once the winner has been announced there was any plan to post an official version of the strip? Just to once & for all set the record straight?
I'm sure it would be much appreciated by all the Abe/Preston devotees worldwide. |

Now yer talking! It'd be great to see exactly what the intended strip was supposed to be as the "MORE JUICE! WE NEED MORE JUICE!" line was kinda perplexing. Just what was going on inside Bernie's mind...? |
