Thank God they're not making a Halo move, but this instead.

They're only making this to prove that Blomkamp can make a full movie. That was one of the doubts that caused 20th Century Fox to back out.

It could still happen, if District 9 is decent. Peter Jackson still wants to do it, at least.

Hrmph. Only two people here actually care about another Peter bloody Jackson film.

Maybe I'm not so good with making catchy thread titles...

But in all honesty, what does that say about the title of the movie? lol, they might want to change it. Maybe they haven't advertised enough yet.

A Peter Jackson backed science fiction film on a geek forum should get more hits.

To the weapons question, I think the alien responded: "Um... Magic?"

I just sort of realized that I have only replied to statements made by other people in this thread and have not yet given my opinion on District 9.

I was very excited by this trailer. I have to say, I think Blomkamp's realistic style is refreshing. Until the "they aren't human" line, I really could have thought this was some sort of documentary.*

*But I didn't because I recognized Neill's name and am familiar with his style, but if I weren't (because lets face it, he's not that well known) I can see someone thinking it was a documentary.

I'm curious about this movie. The trailer surely got my attention, and as a director, I kind of like ol' Pete.

Peter Jackson is not directing this movie, it's Neil Blomkamp.

I saw the trailer for this film a long time ago, and I thought it looked interesting, it looked like a satire on foreign policies and containment of illegal aliens with actual extraterrestrials as the setpiece, and that's why I wanted to see it. The idea seemed clever as the bugs are used as a metaphor for aliens, and the general alienation from everyone else torwards them brings up real-life implications of fear and distrust for foreigners. Then more trailers came up, really actiony-and explody trailers came up, that dashed away all wthat I was speculating....

Now it appears as an action flick about aliens stuck on earth, not a bad idea, but I was hoping for a different execution rather than that. Gears of War was introduced similarly, an extensive viral merketing campaign explaining the collapse of a civilization that is relying too much on a new fuel-source that ultimately brings about destruction and a great civil war. Then it skipped alll that to bring big alien monsters killing people and forgot it's own premise entirely by the time it released. I'm not saying that is bad, just different from what they originally previewed.

I still want to see this movie, it still looks good, and I'm hoping the new trailers are just bullshitting us and the film really is an analysis and not just an action-packed popcorn flick. Hell, I still loved Gears of War after their marketing stint, so maybe District 9 will be great anyways.

No they're not!!! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

I wish they were but Peter isn't interested anymore.

But the new rumors circulating is that Steven Spielberg is interested. So... who knows?

EDIT: Linky

It was never an actual movie, it was just a movie-game... I was expecting something more interesting than those interactive cut scene things that were in Spider-Man 3. I don't know if it's still in production.

Actually that's not true, Peter Jackson's Halo: Chronicles and the movie were not the same thing. They were both shut down though, but the "game" made it longer than the film.

Chronicles was being made by Wingnut (Peter's game studio) but the Weta Studio/Blomkamp project was, indeed, a movie.

Oh, I assumed you guys were talking only about Halo: Chronicles.

Anyway, yeah, I just heard it's been confirmed that Spielberg read the script and 'loved it'.

It's war, which means it might be good (I'm mostly thinking about Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan)... but then again, it's sci-fi, which undoubtedly means it's going to be overloaded with CGI and mindless action (Transformers...).

See, Transformers worked because it was made for kids, it was basically a cartoon brought to life (like G.I. Joe, but I haven't seen that yet). Halo, on the other hand, isn't for kids. I can't see parents bringing their seven-year-olds to the theatre to see a hundred Spartans (and countless other humans) die during the fall of Reach (I also heard the first movie is being based on that, but I'm not sure).

This can go a lot of different ways, most of which might probably lead to fail.

The script Jackson and Blomkamp were doing wasn't about the plot of the first book (Fall of Reach), but the new script that Spielberg likes is based on the Fall of Reach.

Are they going to base the next few movies off the other books, too? Assuming there are going to be more movies...

Halo should never be a movie, and neither should a shitload of other games/classic tv series.

You know what would suck is if Uwe Boll directed a Half-Life movie.

Indeed. I mean, some games have such a great storyline, that they are their own movie. Directors pretty much only do it for money, since the last years, games have become a wide public fenomenon (as opposed to 10 years ago, when gaming was considered for nerds, or little kids).

But as I played Half life 1, opposing force, half life 2, and like them, plenty of other games with a story in them (max payne for example) I went trough them, living the character. It was much greater than just watching a movie, and in most cases, there would hardly be a way to really pour them into a movie and still make the story just as great.

It's the same for old series. I liked the transformers movie as a basic popcorn flick, but both of them really didn't honor the series to any extent... And I'm afraid stuff like the GI Joe movie will be the same.
