| The ones that apparently win all the time and don't suck as badly as William Heung at a baseball game. |

The only space marines I've ever heard of that were any good were always portrayed on paper. Forever War, Starship Troopers, Dune, etc. _________________

Not really, they're all about the same. Just different tech here and there. _________________ Only the strongest will survive.

Dude, compare the book and film versions of Starship Troopers. They're so dissimilar they probably couldn't even produce viable offspring.
-edit- Refering to the space marines, not the works themselves, though it's equally applicable to either understanding.
-redit- Typos. _________________

I was talking about the 40K Space Marines.
And the reason they always win is because the creators get a big hard-on for dudes in power armor that fight wars in the name of some deity and think they can justify murdering millions of lifeforms with that.

Are you saying Space Marines didn't kill millions? Fuck that, in the war against the Tyranids they sacrificed entire planets so the Hive wouldn't get their hands on them. Planets with humans still on it. _________________

Well, now that this thread has already mostly derailed, I can indulge myself.
I am about six books into the Horus Heresy series, and, though it is very well written, it is also pretty depressing. The writers certainly seem to express a dim view of human nature. I mean, I knew that in the 41st millennium, humanity is superstitious, xenophobic, cruel, and repressive, but I at least saw some kind of justification for that; they are best on all sides by enemies and chaos. But even in the 31st millennium, when humanity is "enlightened" and achieving its greatest accomplishments, they are still xenophobic, cruel, and repressive--just not superstitious yet.
Although there are certainly some likable characters, the overall smugness and chauvinism is appalling. The Emperor is a real prick if his goal is really to conquer the galaxy, no matter what. (Though The Emperor doesn't show up much, so it's hard to judge his character.) The way in which the various expeditions claim to approach a planet with peaceful intentions, yet only desire to conquer it, smacks of hypocrisy. And if some civilization should not want to be conquered, then their resistance is taken as an excuse to exterminate them.
I know, I know; it really is social commentary. But it's kind of hard to get into a book if the "good guys" are assholes, and anyone else is likely to die soon. Even a charismatic figure like Horus wouldn't hesitate to annihilate an opposing civilization (even before his corruption).
Moreover, there seems to be an overall message that creativity, free-thinking, and liberty inevitably lead to chaos and corruption. I find myself wondering, "Can't anybody escape the oppressive regime without becoming evil and killing people?"
It's enough to make one crave the idealism of the Tau, or as Aramor noted, the animal purity of the Tyranids because, even though they'll eat your face, they're not jingoistic. _________________ Context is everything. |

Sorry. It's just that a friend of mine is a Space Marine fanboy, who completely denied the fact that the Space Marines did an Exterminatus on lots of planets, thus killing lots of their own people. He said they were already brought to safety, and the millions of lifeforms that died on those planets were only animals. So I kinda go in a frenzy when people start supporting the Space Marine with religious proportions.
Anyway, Tyranids rule. They know no fear (if they're close enough to a Hive Mind), they'll never stop and they are not racists. They'll eat you no matter who yo momma is. _________________

See. You had to read back to find out how this all started. It has begun. It was Azrael's fault.
And the quote seemed the appropriate choice given the previous post. _________________

At least you guys can't blame me for getting a topic off-topic. That's like blaming the sun for shining. _________________
