Considering how many oddly-drawn creatures the alien has raped in Giger's fevered imagination, I'd imagine the hydralisk would only feel comfortable when over a mile away.
I once flipped through a book of H.R. Giger's pieces. It struck me at that point that an alien being a perverted sex maniac is actually a pretty faithful interpretation...

Me and my friends agreed that I have the strongest unit in the entire 40K universe though. It can crush even the biggest of Space Marine armies.
