The oldest recorded English literature. Now a CG movie. Lots of action and eye-popping perspectives. Discuss. _________________ "I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use."

the trailer i saw featured a naked chick in a jacuzzi or something.
i don't recall the original piece to include any naked chicks in a jacuzzi, or any naked chicks at all (unless you consider Grendel's Ma a chick, which is not that far off, as some of the regular forum goers find Abe's Ma pretty hot). and yes, i've read the original thing (in a somewhat linguistically modernized shape though).
it seems they're going to ruin yet another legend with this one. _________________ i have no time for anal love

Indeed. There seems to be a trend with male leads in these movies shouting out three word sentences with unnecessary pauses in between the words. Although, to be fair, I'm sure that this movie was in production before 300 was released.
I was initially very excited about this, but the more I see, the more worried I get. I hope that they don't ruin a classic. _________________ Context is everything. |

I think they already did. Originally Beowulf was a dude who goes around getting medieval on troll ass. In this movie he's just a guy who gets seduced by power, presumably provided by a demonic Angelina Jolie.
Bah, the trailer makes it pretty obvious it's a mostly brainless action film through and through. This... is... SCANDINAVIA!
The 2005 film was good enough, even if it didn't have the cute, cuddly, wyrm. _________________

Dude, Scandinavia is cool.
But anyways, I thought it was good, but to be honest, I expected more from it. I'd give it a 3.5/5. Worth watching. _________________ Only the strongest will survive.

I started the topic because I saw it last night. I thought it was a fantastic popcorn movie. The story was very simple, and there was a lot of eye candy. There were times when I simply forgot I was watching animated characters, because they were so well done. It didn't hurt that there were so many great actors in it. John Malkovich, Anthony Hopkins, Robin Wright Penn. Crispin Glover was Grendel. _________________ "I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use."

I haven't seen it yet, but a mate who's a huge fan of the original story went to see it and really enjoyed it. Maybe it's good. _________________ Da Fro-mastah of da aLp Forums!

He could well be. You know, I just checked back through that thread, and I've never put the band name first. Song first in Italics, every time. I've been wronged, dammit!
He was right about the Y-axis, though. _________________ Da Fro-mastah of da aLp Forums!

| Haven't seen this one yet and may wait 'till it reaches video. I did see an interesting tidbit about it though -- apparently, Hopkins didn't grow a beard for the role and was digitally given on. He was quite impressed with how it turned out. |

Haven't seen the film. Won't bother to until it's on the telly. _________________

| Looks interesting. Unlike everybody else I know, I'm going to see it because I enjoyed the original story, not because it has a firewyrm and/or Angelina Jolie in it. She isn't really naked anyway. |

How good this movie is depends on what youre looking for in it. If youre looking for a good movie, youve found one, if youre looking for a movie thats accurate to its counterpart, well, it wouldnt be unfeasible to say that the movie isnt the way it happened, because the poem itself contained so many contradictions, vague allusions, and otherwise inexcusable flaws in its continuity that youd think the monks were trying to cover up something nasty that the Geats had committed... _________________

A few of my buddies got baked and went to see it but it was sold out by the time they got through the line. _________________ "I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds."

See, what you gotta do is get your tix online or ahead of time, then get baked, then go see it. That's what we did. I doubt the movie would have been a fraction as good had I not been baked. _________________ "I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use."
