So, I was strolling down the aisles of my favorite store (Best Buy), when I happened upon a mispriced item of much greater value than its indicated worth. It was an unopened copy of Dawn of War: Platinum Edition. I got 3 games for 15$, Dawn of War, Winter Assault, and the Dark Crusade, and at first I just picked up the games because I knew they were worth more, but I was absolutely amazed at how fun this game actually is. The races differ more than that of starcrafts, and they must all be played in their own special way to be effective. If anyone plays it, I'd love to team up on Into the Breach and we could attempt to destroy 2 Insane computers.

I played the demo a lot when it first came out. I got annoyed eventually because I could almost never beat anybody else when I played online. That's what I don't like about some of those RTS games; there's one optimal path to choose for a given race, and you just have to follow it over and over again to have a large chance of winning.

Having said that, if I had the free time (which I don't), I would probably play that game. As it is, I'm having enough trouble just trying to paint my figures for the tabletop game.

I think its wonderful fun, and there isnt any one optimal path to choose, though all of the good ones involve masses of well balanced units. Each army has its own strengths and weaknesses, same as Starcraft, but each army has a specific unit designed to deal masses of a particular unit, and the heroes can kill pretty much anything you send them at. My favorite combo is for the Space Marines: Chaplian attached to Grey Knights with Force Commander attached to Assault Terminators. I'd like to see even the Greater Knarloc stop those two beastly squads put together...

Nooo! More burnier research! And This tank make 'da loudest booom!
I love listening to the orks, but I just can't play them, i like ranged units or overpowered melee units, which is why the Space Marines and Tau appeal to me. The Imperial Guard are extremely fun, but they fight defensive battles, and should only be used as a buffer for other players in a multiplayer team game.

Leave your multiplayer handle and I'll add you. I'm: AAATripper.
I usually hang out in the LornV Chat room.

Dawn of War is the main reason I'm looking into either seriously updating my rubbish computer, or just buying a good gaming laptop. Right now I'm just playing single player, because of the massive laggery I had to deal with just lan matches, or even skirmishes with more than a few squads of infantry.

This is with the lowest graphics settings, mind you. And they get pretty fucking low.

But yeah. I'm all about the Waaagh! when it comes to making a difference in a match, because 'dem humies in for a good stompin' and I've got the good bits fo' this foight.

Guard is really fun to play too and my favourite army fluff-wise. Sometimes I play marines just for the voices.

Screw the Tau. Fuckin' Space-Japanese.

*edit*
By the way, is it just me or did the skirmish difficulties balance out more in Dark Crusade? The easy setting was indeed ridiculously easy in the original and Winter Assault, but when I cranked it up to normal, I'd get my ass handed to me real quickly like.

In Dark Crusade I actually have a fighting chance.

They added 2 more difficulties and balanced the others out i think, but i could be wrong.
Also, the chaos pwn, if you use them exactly as youre supposed to, but i just cant figure out how to do that.
Tau, space japanese? Ahah! I thought they sounded familiar, I just couldnt figure out where i heard that accent until you mentioned that. Yeah, they are the space japanese, but I love em anyway, those crisis suits and broadside teams are just too much fun to watch. And the kroot hounds... cant forget those.

As for your computer problem, if you must buy a new computer, and you want a laptop, get some version of the Dell XPS. I'm extremely satisfied with mine from 4 years ago, and it still runs the newest games on the high settings, just not the highest settings.

I really must get Winter Assault and Dark Crusade, I liked DOW a lot. Still play it sometimes, in skirmish. I probably like it more than Company of Heroes, in fact. It's more fun to have Dreadnoughts, Terminators and specialist melee squads. They totally screwed Chaos and the Eldar in the game though, their units suck. And in the case of the Eldar, so do their buildings, which are apparently constructed out of wet toilet paper.

Can anyone tell me wtf kroot (kroots?) are? I saw some figures of them at Games Workshop, and the guy there didn't really seem to know much about them. It looked like they went with Tau, but he seemed clueless.

Oh yeah, and get back to me when they finally put Tyranids in the game. Then I might have to finally give in and buy it. I mean, seriously, they put the Tau in before the Tyranids?

Ugly little Tau lapdogs. They're dumber Tyranids that talk, assimilated to the Tau Empire 'for the greater good'. They eat the dudes they kill and get stronger. Tauranids, if you will.

And I'd like to see 'nids in as well. I don't know much about them, though. Can they be work in a 'build a base, with production solve the case' sort of game without breaking canon much?

Do they make gooey buildings like zerg maybe?

THe kroot are the melee units for the tau, they do all the running, jumping, slicing, and tanking. They also get the kroot hounds, the krootox (counterpart to the Hammerhead Gunship) and the Greater Knarloc (think T-Rex but bigger and more violent). So yeah, they do all the meleeing for the Tau, and they just love a good fight. Like orks but smarter.
If there's one thing i HATE about the Tau, its that they cant build base defenses. Youre practically left defenseless while youre attacking anything, so youre forced to use hit and retreat tactics with your stealthsuits and vepsid to draw enemies into the line of fire of your troops massed at the entrance to your base.

Or you can, you know, not attack with every unit at your disposal at the same time.

It's not like you can depend on a bunch of turrets for defence for any of the other races, you know.

I guess that might be a bit of a sticking point. The Tyranids generally arrive in a swarm from space, are dropped onto the planet, and then eat everything in order to make more Tyranids. The idea of gaining requisition might seem a little odd, but it's doable. After all, you can play take-and-hold missions on the tabletop with the 'nids.

I guess the problem might be with the building of, well, buildings. Tyranids might not need actual buildings, but all sorts of spore towers and weird alien flora grow during a 'nid invasion.

The basic units could be the termagant and hormagaunt. Different weapons could be researched, and the biomorphs would be like the wargear upgrades. Maybe the carnifex would be like the dreadnought. You could even chose different variants (e. g., screamer-killer, tusk-shoveler, etc.) in the same way that you could chose between regular and assault terminators.

I'm not sure what the builder unit would be...maybe some genestealer cultists? (Do they still have those?)

Be a bit of a stretch, wouldn't it? Even if they gained their requisition from killing/eating they'd still have to do the 'take and hold' bit just to fit the game mechanic. 'Least they wouldn't have to piss about building five power stations at the start.

You really do need WA and DC, the Eldar and the Chaos are quite overbalanced in Dark Crusade, the Eldar Wraithlord can take 15 or 16 volleys from all 10 of my heavy weapons teams upgraded with Twin Linked Lascannons. Without the heavy weapons teams, 2 or 3 wraithlords stomp all over my defenses and defensive units (cept the baneblade).

I have no idea what the Tyranids are because I haven't read any of the books or played the tabletop game. I just played Dawn of War, but from what I can read, the Tyranids are basically the series Zerg, right?

I don't know what "series Zerg" means, but yeah, Tyranids would pretty be like the Zerg. Actually, in there current incarnation, I would say that the look of the Tyranids is a bit of homage to Giger.

With series Zerg he means that they are the Zerg of the series... you know.

And yeah, once they finally put Tyranids in DOW, I'm gonna buy it as well.

Well shit. I was certain you were just making up words.

I can't play Chaos for shit, it seems. I'll play orks, marines, guard, but not fucking Chaos. This is a shame, as they've got some of the best voices and looks in the game. Villanous aesthetics, if you will.
