Well, Americans weren't brought up on it, and I think it's difficult to introduce it to us now because with no breaks in the action during which commercials can be shown, the TV stations are not that fond of it.

That's just a shame Sad
I understand most Americans see it as a sport for children and women, don't they? In Europe tough it atracts the same crowd you are used to see at American Football, Basketball or Baseball.
There is some real talent in the USA, so perhaps something will happen in the future.

Actually, I don't know if ABC or ESPN will do this for soccer/football, but what they are doing for auto racing this year is "side by side", where they will play commercials in a main screen, but show racing in a side screen (kind of like picture in picture, but with a bigger second picture).

I know Ajax (not said like the cleanser) and Amsterdam are Dutch football rivals and usually the two best teams in the Netherlands, much like Manchester United and just about every football team in England are. But I wouldn't know any players.

It's true that in the US, there seem to be more children playing it than adults who are interested in it, and that the women's game is more popular than many other women's team sports. I don't think those associations have to do with its lack of success here, though; I think they're side effects rather than causes.

If I'm not mistaken, MLS does draw semi-decent crowds, but probably not big enough to make significant profit in the rather large stadiums they use. Plus, it's likely that most of the fans are recent immigrants who don't have all that much money -- this is the opposite of why TV is so interested in broadcasting golf, which they love to broadcast because the fanbase is very affluent. In this day and age, it's very hard for a sport to get anywhere without significant TV.

Uh... well actually Stu...
Ajax ís from Amsterdam. I think you are talking about Feyenoord, who are from Rotterdam. Ajax and Feyenoord are the two big rivals in the Dutch league. There is also a team from Eindhoven: PSV and a team from Alkmaar (close to Amsterdam) called AZ. Those 4 teams are the best at the moment.

John O'Brien, the American has just left Ajax to go and play at ADO The Hague... Perhaps you do know Angelos Charisteas? If you were interested at the European Championship 2004 you should know him. He was the Greek player who scored the only goal in the finals agianst Porugal.
Ajax was the club who discovered Johan Cruyff... without doubt the greatest Football personality in history. Cruyff was a great player just like Pelé was, but Cruyff also was a great coach and is still involved in the sports.

Since I only know a little about Dutch football, I will bow to your knowledge, Meener. But I have heard of Ajax before.

Not a soccer (football) fan. I am however, a huge hockey fan. And at the moment, my Alaska Aces are kicking ass in the ECHL west division finals. Yeah! Go Aces!

I am a huge "soccer" fan.

I have heard of AJAX and even watched them play on t.v (I think). I support pompey (Portsmouth Football Club) and I would like to share some images with you....

That's Berger (My favourite player)

That's the Yak (Yakubu)

But the most important news for pompey fans is that we hammered Southampton (Arch Rivals) 4-1 on Sunday!

LOL! I've just re-read that post I realised that I sound like some crazed 13 year old!

I do think you've seen an Ajax game... they have always been one of the worlds biggest clubs winning the ECI in 1971, 1972, 1973 and 1995 and schooling players such as Cruyff, Van Basten, Rijkaard, Kluivert, Bergkamp and many more. Even your club has got a former Ajax player:

Jelle van Damme never really made it pass the bench.

If you're not a Manc, you're a wank!

Actually, I'm not big on soccer (I say soccer, inside the United States, where I am now, I'll say soccer. I'll say football outside the US). I think Aussie Rules Football is kind of cool though, though I rarely, if ever, see it on American television.

Cool... playing for Hamburg these days. Ajax-fans will always love him, but it was time for him to go. I don't think I am really gonna miss him. There is one player I still often think about: Chris Chivu... great guy!

Wednesday I am going to see Ajax play local squad Fortuna Sittard... well, actually Roda JC From Kerkrade is closer to my home, but I do not like them and I have lived in Sittard and go to school there, so I like Fortuna. I am predicting a 3-1 winn for Ajax. I will log in tomorrow to give you all a full report Smile

Fortuna Sittard vs AFC AJAX

Ajax defender Johnny Heitinga played 90 minutes.

South-African Steven Pienaar left the field injured

Boukhari provided the assist for the 0-1 by Mitea

Nigel de Jong from Amsterdam scored the 0-2

Anastasiou scored the 1-3, Fortuna fans do not
like the Greek who once played for arch rivals Roda JC

The final score was 2-3...

Mitea 0-1 ('20)
De Jong 0-2 ('42)
Dassen (p.) 1-2 ('49)
Anastasiou 1-3 ('61)
Daemen 2-3 ('63)

I watch German and English leagues anytime I can, but they are not on TV as much as I'd like. I was in Deutschland while the WC was in France, so excitement was everywhere, until damn Croatia beat the German team for elimination. But American football is still sweet.
