Alright, I'm new here and saw a music page and thought to myself "A music page! That's gotta be worth a check."
And I was right, some great music tastes out there. 
But I wanna know who (if anyone) likes the good old Seattle based grunge scene, and I'm not talkin Nirvana, I mean proper Mother Love Bone and Soundgarden. Thems were the times.

"Ten" and "Vs" are awesome records (i think i even like Vs a little bit more).
from then on things get visibly worse. still, there are some gems on "Vitalogy", "No Code", and even "Yield" (weak album indeed, but redeemed by "Evolution" - the best late PJ song). later records are also of some interest, 'specially "Binaural" and the Avocado thing. "Riot Act" is... well... it's bad.
"Badmotorfinger" is great, "Superunknown" and "Down on the Upside" are uneven, but they also have some excellent moments. pre-Badmotorfinger stuff is not in the same league.
"Facelift" is decent, so is "Dirt"; "Tripod" sounds tired, what really turns me on is "Jar of Flies" and "Sap" though.

agreed.
saw them in Prague in September and was quite surprised by how much better the new stuff sounded live - especially Comatose, which suddenly became a good song to me.
Life Wasted and WWS also rocked of course.

i'm no Layne Stayley worshipper, but... no, it just feels wrong.
Cantrell could just stick to making his solo recors ("Degradation Trip" was at least semi-interesting)

Finally got round to getting the new one last week - very good. Haven't heard the boys play live since '99 in Philadelphia - must have been the Yield tour? Few years before that had a pint with Stone Gossard in Millstreet, Ireland after their gig. I was so starstruck I could hardly speak The good ol' days...
Is the new Alice any good? Kinda feels like bloody sacrilege if you ask me, but...

Nirvana rocked! Smells like teen spirit's one of those songs that's guranteed to get everyone in the room, regardless of age, gender or musical taste off their collective arse and onto the dancefloor. Shame about the shotgun really..

Well...without of course endorsing heroin use in any way, a lot of the best music from the grunge era was completely heroin-fueled. Alice in Chains being a fine example. The big heroin tragedy of the scene for me was Andrew Wood, frontman of Mother Love Bone, who died on the night of the debut album launch from an overdose. The others went on to form Pearl Jam and the rest is history, but he was a killer songwriter with an awesome voice.

Yes - Alice in Chains, I remember a concert from them and the lead singer was complete high on heroin, his hands were swollen because there'd been so many needles puncturing them during the last few months and it was so fucking intense.
But it's a myth that heroin made them better musicians. A very bad or good love life, worries about the state of the world (cf Rage Against the Machine) or just about anything can do that as well.
They were incredible fine musicians and composers and heroin just made them dead or completely wasted musicians.
Let's have a minute of silence to commemorate them
But I was a raver, so how much do I care anyway?

sure, Layne was great, but don't forget it was Cantrell who came up with most of the songs, both music and lyrics.
just a point i thought was worth making.

well, had he not od'ed, there would never be the Temple Of The Dog album, which is one of the best things that came from the grunge scene.
i actually don't find Wood that much of a talent, but i don't want to disrespect the dead, so i'll just shut up.
ok, Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns is an awesome song, i agree.

Yeah, I saw them only the once and I found that the whole night had an almost tragically squalid feeling from it - REALLY intense. Might have been the most memorable concert of my life. Good point about Rage - saw them play at a protest and the atmosphere was fucking electric!

I completely agree, but without trying to be completely cynical, drug (or alcohol) abuse is a shortcut to personal tragedy that may have been an important catalyst for many musicians. <ducks>.

Good question...
Well, I've been to one of the first really big raves in the Netherlands, Mystery Island in 1993, and that one was fucking awesome, but already quite commercial.
I actually liked the illegal ones better.
I think one of the really best of those was in Maastricht, probably 1994 or 1995, a city in the south of Holland, where there is a cavesystem, an old mining hill and the rave was inside the caves and there were candles everywhere and each cave had a different music style. There were pornographic projections on the cave walls and I remember there were robots walking around as well.
And there were of course the boys who couldn't dance while keeping their clothes on (it was summer) in the cave where they played electro and I ended up swimming in a small lake just outside the caves and finished the night completely naked myself, watching the sunrise with a girl with blonde dreadlocks I never met before in my arms.
You see, raving is nicer than grunge, because, you know, there you go to a concert and be depressed together instead of going out of your mind, and people actually hurt each other on the dancefloor and you meet a girl in a t-shirt with Curt Cobain's date of death on it (I think the suicide was actually part of his record deal) and after the concert it's 'your place or mine' and then you retreat together to quietly go and hang yourselves.
Also, I saw Underground Resistance play in 1993, really cool as well.

that's better coz it's slower and you can look in each other's eyes till the end.
ideally you pass away exactly the moment the candle burns out, but it's tricky and difficult to synchronize, only few succeeded although many have tried.

I'm suddenly feeling so nostalgic it hurts... We used to do a great line (dunno if we still do, it's been years) in impromptu beach raves over here - massive fires and a few hundred people on some windswept beach on the Atlantic with the waves crashing in. Ireland being what it is tho, the community was pretty small, and by the time you'd gone to a few you knew most of the people there, so it was more like a really big house party. Great days...

Remember those break & enter warehouse parties?
There was this empty factory west of Amsterdam and there were great parties like that there.
But yeah, I stopped going to raves on a regular basis already in 1995, it became pretty disgusting, pretty fast. Although there have been a few good ones since...

Never went to one - lack of suitable warehouses in the vicinity... Tho I remember there was this daft old landowner up in Tipperary who owned a castle on a large estate, and he used to occasionally host raves IN the castle. It was class! Organised parking and everything... A rave with the added benefit of being able to have a hot shower and maybe somewhere warm to lie down and twitch while your brain cooled down...

The band's drummer, Jess Margera, is the brother of Bam Margera.
I actually saw them live... I had chills down my spine... too bad I only saw like the last 15 minutes though...
