Typically, Americans are required to learn at least two years of a foreign language (at least we did in my high school). Those of us fortunate enough to attend a school with a decent foreign language program and faculty have the chance to learn German, French, Latin, or (oy vey) Spanish.  Sometimes, colleges require students to learn Greek and Hebrew, depending on where you attend. 
What is sad is that I retained more of the 3 years of German that I learned in high school than the four years' worth of Spanish I learned in college.

Sorry if my German sucks. I'm still learning. Sort of, it's a side thing I wanted to learn.
Aber he, ist es schwierig für mich, 4 Sprachen zu kennen. So yeah, nicht von meinem nachlässigen Deutschen beleidigt werden.

As I said, no problem if you can't speak german as good as a person who has lived his whole life here....I bet youre better at english than me.
But what do you mean?
You don't wanna be insultuted by a careless german or for lacking german skills?

And as I said, I know how to speak German, but I suck at spelling it
Also, when I speak German I tend to talk rapidly, so nobody notices I actually suck...
That trick got me some respect from fellow classmates
Teacher saw through it though
