Implement New Rule?

How about a rule stating that no one can post a link until, say, 10 posts? That might take care of most of the spammers that are plaguing this place.

Post your thoughts here.

-edit- I meant plug in some code to keep members from posting links before 10 posts.

You mean the spammers? Those are bots. They don't care about rules. The only way to stop them is to do some php trickery.

Bernie did install a mod that inhibits member profiles to thwart some kinds of bots, but some manage to pass through now and then.

Sort of impossible to pull off. At least in a forum like this.

Maybe on one of those really old forums, that nobody really uses anymore, where you'd have to scribble out this half-a-page bunch of code just to post an image.

Or we go exactly as Simon put it and make a rule about it. That oughta scare 'em.

Might wanna just go with the kitten system.

It's a nice idea, but I don't know if we really have the technology. Bernie activated email verification a while back, and it helped, but some spammers are still getting through.

Anything's possible if you know how to mod/hack phpBB, which I do, but things have been kinda busy at aLp hq lately. I think it's a good idea and will try to do when I get the time.

Actually, if a mod already exists for this and someone can find it, that'd be helpful.

I put in the hack. Posters can no longer use the "url" bbcode tag or "a" html tags to post links until they've reached 10 posts. They still can, however, simply post a URL and the forum software will automatically convert it to a link. Spammers don't usually do that, but if they start, I'll put in the extra 15 minutes of work to prevent that too.
