Yes, ideally the acquisition of knowledge is its own reward. But the reality is that often the primary value of an education is its practical value. Certainly I wish that I could simply learn for the sake of learning, but I need to get a decent job. I really hate to be reinforcing the dichotomy between the liberal and the technical curricula, but...

An education is going to adorn my resume, and hopefully it will get me a job. It would be great if I took to learning like you do Munan, but I don't have the time or energy or choice of classes. I have a major and I have to keep that in the back of my mind at all times and unfortunately I've been groomed to think I'm working to get a piece of paper that said I did the work. Please don't ban me from any of your classes Laughing . I'd at least let you try to teach me to learn for the sake of learning (very Aristotelian I believe), unfortunately I don't think I have the potentiality for that anymore Rolling Eyes .

People, if you shut up and think for a second you'd realise that nearly any subject could be at a centre of everything if you felt like it. Particularly Math, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Sure, you CAN draw one of those for geography, but why? All you're doing is saying "We is the best! All other subject are under my powa!". In fact, you might as well say that the diagram represents the fact that without all of these other factors, geography couldn't exist.

Oh, and nice additions Koko.

There are other ways of gathering knowledge for its own sake than paying thousands of pounds a year to do so. It's still something I do all the time, but nevertheless I also always keep an eye on the end-of-year exams: I didn't spend 18 years getting into one of the twin most prestigious universities in the country just to fail.

These discussions are priceless, especially when people compliment me (I like compliments).

Oh, yes - in the middle ages literary studies was in the centre of everything.

Hmm, those days of yore - why have they passed.

@Blaster, of course I agree with you, but I'm a bit of a utopist when it comes to things like this

Finally! Something worth replying to!

Seriously, if that is true, you should not be in college."

Exactly. A common misconception is that students think that faculty are there for them; students should be at school for themselves. Go read Pirsig's "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" and decide what is right for you ("you" is not directed at anyone in particular). *L*

Truth be told, an education is not going to get you the job. An education will get you the interview. You have to still get yourself your job.

Time and energy are there -- you just have to WANT it enough to make the sacrifice (you know, not go to parties, postpone a social life, etc. -- unless you are a genius). Those people sleeping outside for PS3 made me laugh; I wish my life was so busy and important to be able to sleep out 3 days for a console. I wonder what their time and energy levels are...

This is an image (after I subtly edited it), that has come up in my Geography class. I posed the question "What is geography" to myself a few times and never really gotten a good answer. I still don't know what we are studying and if Geography really exists, but this image pissed me off and a few other people. I makes no sense at all. Please share your comments.

Are you saying Geography is somehow connected to silverware, or spooning? I hope its spooning, if I wanna slip it in someone's butt, the first step is spooning.

No, it's just, the spoon you hold in your hand, how do you know it's really there? There is no spoon.

Silly rabbits! Trix are for kids.

It was metaphorical expression of apostasy regarding the concept of "geography" -- the statement regarding the spoon.

I saw a bumper sticker on my Geography professor's car today that said: "Geography, where would you be without it."

Next time I catch her on the road in her hybrid suv this will be the last thing she sees:

Well I'm not into learning and books and stuff just for the "educational" value like you are. I'm basically dirt in your eyes.[/spoiler]

No, you are not dirt in my eyes.

Where did you get that impression? Because really, I know I can be elitist, but I seldomly feel I'm 'above' people, you know.

And I certainly don't feel that way towards any member of these forums.

I just didn't think your post was particularly funny or witty.
