True, especially considering Pluto's. It never was much bigger than a dirty snowball, and we've seen what the gas planets can do when it comes to dirty snowballs.

As far as I'm concerned, Pluto is still a planet. I don't need some union of astronomers to tell me what to think or believe

Not to be too much of an ass (OK, to be way too much of an ass) but what did you base your original belief upon? Isn't it based upon the thoughts and ideas of that same union of astronomers?

They called Pluto a planet in 1930 based on the information they had at the time. Now that they have more information, they rethink their decision based on that new information. Their new decision is that Pluto can't be classed as a planet without having to classify what may eventually be hundreds of other objects as planets.

They don't want to go there. They don't want the difinition of planet to be such that there are hundreds, or even dozens, of planets in the Solar System.

And don't forget, they are the professionals. It is their job to do these things. So if you can't rely on them, what will you rely on?

Because it is science.

In science, you have rules, you have definitions, you have specifics, you have theories.

When the old rules and definitions and specifis and theories no longer work, you scrap them, and start using the new ones.

Having exceptions for the sake of exceptions is the very antithesis of science.

If you want to consider Pluto a planet, you are free to do so. But it makes as much sense as considering your car to be an amimal, because cars move people around, and it used to be only animals that moved people around.

No hard feelings or anything, just the anal-retentive rantings of a scientifically trained matematician.

Hey complex MiB, if by definition a satellite is a moon, then an artificial satellite is a artificial moon?

The ISS is orbiting the Earth, and people might live there, maybe with some tweaks in the definition, we can consider it a artificial habitable moon?

There are some companies that promote sending someone's ashes when are deceased and send it in a capsule to the space, and leave it orbiting the Earth.
Would we be turning our grandpa to a moon?
