Zelda and Link had this s&m roleplay thing going on. The whole fetch the Tri-Force was pretty much just an extention to the play. Every now and then Link would come back without the Tri-Force and Mistress Zelda would punish her slave for his incompetence and both would get their sick little jollies.
I wouldn't be surprised if the "Tri-Force" was just a fancy name for some horrible, yet imaginative, magically enhanced strap-on.
