Okay you got me there. Barely understood what you said, but you got me.

I have been thnking about this, and I think I have come up with a better way to say it.

*Ahem*

To actually find experimental "proof", you have to have an experiment with an outcome (or outcomes) which prove the theory, and an alternative outcome (or outcomes) which disprove the theory.

In all four of the experiments listed above (the pure math thingy is not really an experiment), there will be searches for phenomena that are predicted by string theory. But failure to find those phenomena will not disprove the theory.

It may be that out detectors are not up to the task. Or that we are looking in the wrong place. Or the things we are looking for may not even be detectable.

If there is not an outcome that will disprove the theory, then the experiment cannot prove the theory.

Did that help?

Cogito Ergo Sum?

Actually, it's rather a turning around of classic Cartesian thinking, but I won't go into that right now.

Backing up Complexnumbers' argument is "Dark Matter". If there is no way in which we can disprove or test for its existence, then it should be discarded as a mainstream explanation untila reliable method of experimentation for it has been formulated. Until then, it would be a little refreshing if a scientist could just say "We don't know."

Dude, good scientists say it all the time!

Otherwise, science would loose its raison d'Ítre...

The main reason it is not discarded is that there is no other theory at this time that explains everything. There is Einstein's Theory of Relativity that adequately explains things at a macro level. There is quantum theory that adequately explains things at a micro level. But neither works at both levels.

String theory works at both levels.

So, love it or hate it, support it or hope to disprove it, it is currently the best we have.

And every scientist, whatever side of the argument they believe, says this about string theory:

Every Scientist, while discussing string theory, wrote:
We don't know.
