|
|
Recently I've been having doubts about my chosen career path in theoretical mathematics, and have been finding myself drawn more and more to the idea of writing, possibly in the hopes of writing to support myself.
I'd always found it an intriguing idea, but I'd always figured that since it was such an unreliable means of supporting oneself, that I should cover my bases with something totally different.
Anyway, I've found myself writing bits and pieces of things here and there, so I'd like to start an official thread for amateur writers to step forward, and maybe show some stuff for peer criticism, bounce ideas off each other, that sort of thing.
So, are there any others here who've ever had at some point aspirations of writing commercially? _________________ The official MILF-masta of the AlP forums.

Yup. Add that to the fifty-million other things which I have considered briefly. I would be happy give you some constructive criticism, so long as your writing doesn't suck ass. _________________ Context is everything. |

is talent included anywhere in your considerations?
you're saying this like it was shoemaking or something. it's art. there are more criteria involved.
hmmm, i know, today i'll write a bestseller, and next week maybe i'll compose an opera or two? right after i finish with this sculpture. _________________ i have no time for anal love

Here in Singapore it's hard to break into the market. And our local talent is pretty small, that's another thing too. But I know of a few writers who do make it to success eventually.
Given someone points me to the right direction, I'll definitely be interested in this. No harm in trying, no? _________________ Certified Evil Bastard. Serving your cuppa at Starbucks Terminal One Arrival Hall, Singapore. The one who started Premium Evil's tea. |

Yes. I have thought of writing commercially. Either in online journalism or in the more "cultural" flavour of novels and non-fiction. I have had good reviews on any writing I do...my only problem is finding the time to do it. Once I start a project, I have to finish it, even if it means procrastinating on more important things in life.
EDIT: And yes, I am wanting to write a Predator or AVP novel. Who knows...maybe I can complete one and FOX is willing to license the rights for me to publish it. Time will tell ;P _________________ plz to be visiting my board of predator debauchery |

Or do you just mean a copywriter? I wrote texts about urban regeneration on this site of the municipality of Amsterdam, www.parkstadamsterdam.nl. That entire site is basically my work, as far as texts are concerned. It was very well-payed, but part of my job as a consultant for that organization.
Also, my girlfriend is a professional text-writer and translator from Arabic to Dutch. She mainly writes guidebooks (like, the Dutch Lonely Planet).
It's not something that will make you rich, but it is one of the best ways to earn your money, if you ask me. The most difficult parti is getting customers. You have to be willing to start with a low price. As soon as you can add a few customers to your portfolio, you'll see you start to attract more and more.
But you definitively need the talent, as well as the stamina.
Oh, and I just earned quite some money writing poetry for a congres. That's actually nice: you earn money for something you get to keep afterwards...
I also write pieces about current affairs such as the Danish cartoon riot. I get payed for giving guest-lectures on those kind of topisc as well. _________________ The Justified Ancient of Mu Mu |

Remove drinking and replace that with sleeping. ;P

Yes, one of the most important things to do is to build a portfolio of some kind. Even if it means saving and keeping note of everything that you wrote that gets published. This includes editorials for newspapers and magazines to submitting short stories and poems for monthly writing publications.
By the time you decide to write an actual book, you will have some official public writing under your belt to show the agent (if you so choose to pick an agent instead of trying you luck by going to a publisher directly). _________________ plz to be visiting my board of predator debauchery |

I did. If you didn't copied that from some ordinary wereowlves movie filmscript, you could write a bestseller in the horror-perverse literature. _________________

Aramor: I read your thing. It's a short piece, so it's hard to jump to a conclusion very quickly. My own take was that you glossed over the whole blackout and reasoning up to what happened, when that should have been described and fleshed out in more detail.
On a side note, werewolves are a favorite topic of mine, so they always get brownie points. _________________ The official MILF-masta of the AlP forums.

Yeah well, I was very bored and depressed at the time, and I was planning to write more later. But I'm not really depressed, so I don't have any inspiration...
Don't tell anyone, but the main character is based upon someone really close to me... _________________

When I was nine or so, I made stories about me and my friends who can morph to animals... yeah, greatly inspired by Animorphs. And we threw in a lot of funny stuff too, like Starcraft, the Zerg, Jim Raynor our buddie ( ) and some other more.. and the writing is crap. Like totally. You'ld hate my writing, haha. Hey, I was nine! I think.
Funny thing is, near a decade since that series, me and my friend are thnking of continuing the series
Well, I've already made scans of the old scripts, so I'll probably chip in later if I've already uploaded them.. _________________ Certified Evil Bastard. Serving your cuppa at Starbucks Terminal One Arrival Hall, Singapore. The one who started Premium Evil's tea. |
