The current vote incentive: Claw and Jumpman.

This is me drawing comic books at around 8 years old. Indulge me for a sec, I am laughing hysterically at how awful these are. This particular title was about a superhero duo; one guy had a horn and could jump high, and the other was a guy whose hands could turn into anything. The villain in this issue is Inviso-Tron, who was named that for no apparent reason I can figure.

The Claw and Jumpman, Issue 1, c. 1982

I hope you enjoyed this twisted trip down memory lane...

Thanks,

Heck, Bernie, I still have The Bombardier, your parody of The Rocketeer, somewhere.

I'm surprised you don't routinely burn and turf all evidence of your past after every relocation.

That doesn't happen to anyone else does it?

Page 4 is definatly the best.
"Into the cage you go!" How did they fit into that tiny ship again? Very Happy
I can't stop laughing when I read that.

Heh heh. The Bombardier appeared in the final issue of The UndergrounD, circa 1991. I happen to have a copy right here. Bernie also drew the cover, and I concluded the epic saga of Ameristein II. Noah drew the back cover. Stu got a byline, but I'm not sure he actually did anything. Other than look good, of course. Smile

The Bombardier ended cliffhanger-style with the questions, "Will the Bombardier eventually save the day? Will I stop ripping lines from the actual movie? Will the Yankees ever win the World Series again?" All natural questions fourteen years ago. And the last question is starting to become relevant again... Very Happy

(And Dean, The Rocketeer was the movie that introduced the world to the lovely and talented future-Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Connelly. I never saw the film, but I remember Bernie raving about the gratuitous cleavage-cam like it was yesterday.)

A bunch of us went to the premiere of The Rocketeer. Or maybe it was a special showing. I actually still have the VIP All Access Pass hanging over my desk.

I don't know what it is with you and... phallic symbols in you art, Bern. The Bombardier's helmet was... well, Johnny Holmes had nothing on it.

Oh, and Bernie's answers to those questions were "I don't know, I don't know, of course".

Actually, I never saw the Rocketeer either, so you must be thinkin of somethin else. Career Opportunities, on the other hand, was a fave among me and my freshman dorm cronies.

oh man... I'm glad Im not the only person who did that sort of thing as a kid. I have a few old "Blakeman Adventures" comics I used to do. When I was 4, I was drawing them on the inside covers of Coloring books, lol. Anyways, this is pretty neat, the artwork is marginally better than anything I've ever drawn, including anything I can draw today. Guess that's why I do a photo comic myself. I also saw this was the vote incentive on Buzz.

You never saw the movie you drew a parody for? You must have seen the trailer then, or a TV ad or something, because I do remember your comments pretty clearly. This would be the year before your freshman year...

Ah, nothing like some rich, shared memories! Wink

"Help the bombardier!" "I'm the bombardier!!"

Ah, real literature. But you wouldn't know anything about that, would you? With your comic books, and sock hops, and hula hoops.

"The Rocka-who?" is a quote from the actual Rocketeer movie, BTW.

Lemme just go through this thing, and see if maybe the author can explain his intent to us a little more.

  • Page 1:
    • Is he... playing darts? Is his spaceship hovering above his chair? What?
    • "Inviso-Tron! It was a..." [illegible. You certainly have improved your handwriting since then.]
    • I like the "jump!" sound effect.
  • Page 2:
    • What the hell is going on in the first panel or the "ROAR!" panel?
    • Could you take away the guy's flamethrower already??
    • Ah, good superheroes always call the police to bail their ass out.
    • Okay, what exactly are Inviso-Tron's powers??
  • Page 3:
    • Umm... where are we in this first panel?
    • Love this "blast" and "creeps" stuff, it is so '80s cartoon.
  • Page 4:
    • No, seriously, did you think every page had to begin with the people in a totally different location?
    • "Don't bother melting the bars, they're energized!" Well, sure, I can see how... HUH???
    • Again, random policemen are more competent than our heroes.
  • Page 5:
    • Now he's a wizard??
    • That "how to walk" spell must come in super-handy.
    • Ah, the Pac-Man monster.
    • What the hell does Claw's banner say?
    • A stirring ending, where we don't know WTF happened. Keep them wanting more, I guess.

This is the adorablest thing ever! Like Dean said, I love how Inviso-Tron keeps calling them creeps. It just gets me wondering at what age you picked up the "colorful" language you use today.

What does your mother think of aLp, huh Bernie?

The Claw: Not quite...
