Okay, I saw this last thursday on opening night, and I was blown away. You can probably tell who my new hero is.

For those who have read the book before hand (like me) it might not be satisfying, as it does change and leave out a lot of important elements, but even so it's one of the more faithful comic translations I've seen. Somewhere between Spiderman and Sin City in terms of literal translation. The third act of the story does get changed dramatically, since a lot of the supporting characters are left out and they majorly impact what happens and how. But there are many scenes which are brought almost perfectly intact from the page to the screen; V's hijack of the TV station, the meeting in Dr. Surridge's bedroom, the Larkhill and Valerie flashbacks, Evey's imprisonment, and the final resolution are all imaculately done and should please anybody who's a book purist.

Of course, in between these scenes a lot gets changed, including the characters of V and Evey. In the book V's an almost inhuman mannequin of a character, because he's convinced that his power lies not in his humanity but in the symbol and idea that he represents. In the movie he's quite humanized, showing a wicked sense of humor, a knot of rage and a deep vulnerability which are disconcerting at first but grows on you very quickly. On top of that, he's still just as insane as he was in the book. It helps that Hugo Weaving rules your ass. He's the best thing that could have happened to this movie. I've always loved him in whatever he's done, but he never impressed me so much as in his role as V. Natalie Portman also does a wonderful job. I've only ever seen her in the SW prequels and so I'm pleasantly suprised that she can actually do great drama. Her Evey is more grown up and has a backbone, but keeps the essential optimistic pacifist from the novel alive.

The action scenes are few but beatifully done. Hugo brings his quick, nimble fighting style from the Matrix movies and looks great.

I have my gripes with some of the stuff that got added and a lot that got taken away; I felt some of the scenes were perfect except that they got robbed of some great lines, and some of the scenes were just clunky because what got added didn't gel with what was kept from the novel. And then there's the loss of some of the message and fierceness of the book; The anarchy push is gone, and V seems more like a sympathetic hero than an ambiguous catalyst, but not by too much. He still does all the same stuff that makes you wonder if he's really who you should be routing for, even as you route for him.

And some of the stuff they added really preserved the tone of the book and made for great entertainment, like the egg-frying scene, V's v-word-filled introduction, and a scene involving Benny Hill music which, unless you have no soul, will have you on the ground laughing.

Okay, so in short: Go see it. It rocks.

I actually wanted to make my own review, after seeing it.

In short: In essence, it's what the Matrix should have been. Seriously, that's what I think.

Also V can kick Batman's ass any day.

V has no face. V is not a person. V is an idea. He's everybody and nobody. He's the boogyman, the hero and the villain. The black sheep of the family. The match that sets off the powder keg.

In other words, V is a living symbol and to remove the mask would reveal him as human, and so take away some of his power. His power lies in the fact that anybody can be V simply by wearing the mask, and so V can never die, much like his ideals.

I did notice that his voice seemed familiar when I went to see it last night, and the silhouette in his phony prison had me wondering too (it was the hair). I thought it was on OK movie, but only because anytime any of the characters had something really important to whisper the cell phone of the guy that sat in front of me went off or he would have something to yell like "boo!", so I missed everything that had anything to do with the plot.

Aw, man. I think I would have murdered him halfway through for ruining my awesome movie experience. I did have a moment of wanting to kill somebody when the house lights came on briefly over the screen during a crucial moment and I missed what was going on.
