1) Now that he's dead, he'll be praised again, even by M.J. haters.
2) No one cares.
3) Even more people will hate him.
4) Stuff involving comedy.
I personally liked some of his music, but that's just me. |

Actually, I find this sad news. I know that he turned into a caricature of himself (and more than that), but he made some fucking great music. In his own right, he actually was something of a musical genius.

he was as close to musical genius as a pop artist can, and one of the greatest artists in history of popular music, let alone one of the most influential. in his prime he was a king of pop in every sense and nothing can ever take this away from him. even though he stopped being relevant in the late 90s, the body of work he had put out prior to that deserves every, i mean, every accolade possible. artistically, a great individual was lost. if you claim to appreciate good music, i don't know how you can not pay respect to what he did.
on a personal level, he was a guy with a totally broken psyche. i saw him as a mentally sick person, who did some wicked things and probably didn't even realize it. i believe his own life was painful to him.
i actually think he's better off that way.
[edit: i added "late" to "the 90s" because i just remembered that his '95 album had just as many killer hit singles as any of the previous ones.]

Some news outlets have been showing snippets of the interview he had with Oprah. He said that he essentially had no childhood--school and work--and was sad because he couldn't go out and play like the other kids. In that same interview there was mention that he was beaten by his father to get him to perform. Another interviewer said that Jackson had confessed to him that he was a lonely person. Long story short, I agree with you--broken and probably not aware that things he did were bad.
The "Thriller" video is probably creepier to me now than when I was little.

^Well, you learn something everyday. The more I learn about him, the more I'm becoming more sympathetic towards his situation.
I just thought he became... crazy? Towards the end of his life. I never stopped to think of there was a reason behind it all.
The general opinion doesn't change, but maybe now I'll laugh less whenever people try and make fun of him for these things. |

i remember that interview, it was around 92-93 or something like that, and was very big news then. i watched it all at the time and even had it videotaped  it was in the middle of my great MJ phase, when he was truly my childhood idol.
the story of his broken childhood and his abusive father was legendary ever since i remember. i would state it this way: he never had childhood, so he never grew up.
he was a tragic figure really, more than anything else. divine artistic talent combined with absolutely fucked up emotional and mental life.
