Because silk is classy, and many people are simple-minded materialists who do not value life experiences or the prescence of others, filling these voids instead with objects that only give the illusion of joy, or the satisfaction of owning something many desire. They are ignorant and forget that cloth is just as good as silk, better actually, they prefer something delicate but expensive because it gives them the belief that they are swanky aristocrats who deserve the best they can have.
But by all accounts, this is just taking a cynical and biased view. Maybe it could be for a gift for someone to show affection and display the willingness to offer high-class material for the sake of their happiness?

Hmmm. I think you are, in part missing, what I am asking. People don't desire silk sheets. I'm not sure how the idea that people would want silk sheets is still something considered desirable or even classy. They must have been used in a movie a long time ago.
People with money don't spend it on silk sheets either. It's not considered "classy". It would be like shopping at Fredricks of Hollywood or some local "adult store", not Victoria's Secret. "Classy" sheets can be had for some $200+ at Pottery Barn.
If people with money want something silky smooth they buy silk clothes, not silk sheets.
Edit: I do agree, however, with what you said regarding materialism. _________________ "If wishes were horses, we'd all be eating steak." |

That French program in the Matrix: Reloaded once commented that the best feeling in the world, whatever it may be, must be the equivelant of wiping your ass with silk. Or something like that. Obviously he's never had sex before.
Anyway, I'm considering watching Gran Torino but I heard it's sort of downing Asians. Is that right, or what? |

The Merovingian was talking about the French language, and that cursing in French is liking wiping your ass with silk. _________________

Narky is a term to describe the general attitude of executioners to criminals in the mid-16th century. _________________

So they'd be Narky at you AND chop your head off/disembowel you/hang you/burn you/lock you in an oubliette?
Damn, that's fiendish...remind me to never go back in time to the 16th century and get caught. _________________ Why must the government repress our god-given right to no pants? |

Well a majority of the posts lately are scornful ripostes to Nron, whether he actually deserves the abuse or not. Either way it's fueling the forum.
I think Nron's posts may become an alternative source of energy here, given the right income. _________________ Only the strongest will survive.
