ITs true and all of us with jobs know it.
half the shit they teach we wont use. and once we get a feel for what we DO want to do they force you to continues doing all the other bullshit.
ah and by the time the kids in highschool right now get out of college what they have learned will become outdated withing 5-6 yrs of graduation
so i wanna know this: Who the fuck came up with this shit?!?!
give me real data or complete BS i dont care. i could use a laugh _________________ Clueless and the Grammer Unerwnschte

Yes, but what school teaches you is how to think, which is in serious shortage these days. The actual information is unimportant. _________________ Da Fro-mastah of da aLp Forums!

I once heard that you remember about 10% of what you learn in school, and you use about 10% of that in the rest of your life.
And I think that's true. The only thing I use which I learned is the occasional mathematic stuff like Pythagoras and such. _________________

I don't think school contributed anything to the way I think now. _________________

Hmm, difficult to test that theory though, unless you could somehow converse with an alternative reality version of yourself that never went to school. _________________ Da Fro-mastah of da aLp Forums!

I'm going to have to side with Irish on this one.
Aramor, I'm curious: How did you learn the written language(s?) and how to form sentences, or multiple languages for that matter? While I understand often people (kids mostly) learn language from the tv, I'm sure your schooling provided this for you. Likewise, school provides a social environment and a chance to interact with other people/kids. This, perhaps, is may be more important than the facts and grammar you pick up. How else would you get this interaction without school? Where is Aramor going to meet chicks? Granted, he is old enough to go to bars in his country, but what would he have done before reaching that age?
Regardless of the discussion, I assume most non-war-torn societies have explicit laws dictating some form of education for children -- whether it be home-school, public or private. So, unless you have access to the alternate world "you", you aren't going to be able to test any theories.
Finally, though all jobs may not require an education, many of the better-paying ones do, unless you are blessed with amazing athletical abilities, novel (profitable) ideas or other talents. My guess though is that the percentage of people that actually possess this, be low. _________________ "If wishes were horses, we'd all be eating steak." |

Aramor is getting my drift here.
School may teach me to do things like arithmatic but I learned to write, read and talk from my parents.
Humans are born thinkers. School can help shape how we think but we as people choose what we remember and our personal opinions.
cfos is right as well though. Schools today are responsible for launguage skills and parents trust them to teach their children the basics. But the problem with this is that not every child learns at the same pace. China for example has a set program for their children that expects all of the students to learn at the same pace, in the set dedlines as if they were programming robots instead of caring for the minds of living beings.
School helped me in few ways but the amount of times it has helped me in daily life I can count on my hands. Thanks for your opinions guys. Glad that not everyone these days are mindless zombies. _________________ Clueless and the Grammer Unerwnschte

I thought that with "how to think" he ment like... you know... how to perceive the world and stuff. You know, on a larger level then just knowledge.
Ofcourse I got most of my knowledge from school, but the way I think, about the world around me, is my own doing. That's what I ment. _________________

i work as an English teacher, so i guess i'm a bad example, because i can't see how i could have possibly learnt how to pass on knowledge of grammar, vocabulary and phonetics of a foreign language to people without going through all the stages of school education in the first place.
but i think i know what you are getting at, Nron, only i think you phrased it wrong. it's not "school is bad, mmmkay", it's "today's education system is getting worse and worse, mmmkay". and that's something i could agree with. _________________ i have no time for anal love

It'll come quickly, don't worry about it. I was going to make a big rant on how the concept of the school system was good, it was just it's implementation that was too often deplorable, but it seems Sal nailed it on the head in one paragraph. _________________
