I thought the English voice acting was pretty good, though occasionally somewhat out of place...

new thoughts, after another evening (well, a short part of it anyway) of playing:
a) sex cards are the best collectible items in a game EVER. what an incentive to check out all the npcs in an area!
b) @ Chainsaw's comment: fighting styles stupid? not very imaginative, maybe, but stupid? let's see, strong for more damage, quick for more attacks, and against many opponents. aren't these the rock-botom standard fighting styles to be found in 90% games? unless you are indeed of opinion that 90% games are stupid, then it makes sense.
c) Geralt's a legend in his own right already (especially down here, obviously, the Witcher books were a smash hit in the 90s). i'm not sure if making us play a character who is already such a well established, round figure was the best of options. it takes some part of the fun from us, the part which is creating your very own hero, with which you identify better by definition. here we just have a pair shoes to fill (and these are admittedly some kickass shoes). i'm just wondering which is better.
expect more from me.

Well, as someone who wasn't familiar at all with the character to begin with - I'm really enjoying filling those shoes, and the amnesia gimmick is a good one to make you feel like you're building your own hero at the time.

I'm currently about half way through Act III now.

I didn't get very far into the game, admittedly, but my gripes with the fighting style system are:

Against a 'Fast' opponent I couldn't actually land a hit using any other style. Forcing me to use a particular style when others are theoretically available is a major annoyance to me. Why bother to include them at all if their only purpose is to force you to select them, and make you unnecessarily switch between fighting styles when fighting mixed mobs? I'd hold this up as the epitome of stupid game design. It serves no purpose but to frustrate. If that changes later in the game, fair enough, but I had no interest in getting further into the game at a time when there were plenty of better titles I could be enjoying. Playing games is supposed to be fun.

Reading about it in previews, I had gotten the impression that it was a more conventional style system, where "fast" meant the player strikes quickly, but not powerfully etc. etc. without limiting who you could actually hit. That would have made sense, and given the player freedom to play the game the way they want.

I also didn't like the whole 'click to combo' system. I personally would prefer devs either make an action game, or just go for the 'click once to fight and then get on with picking tactics' mechanic.

I do think that 90% of games are stupid, and are also crap. Which is why I don't play many, these days. I'll give Witcher another go in the Summer, when I'm not working all the time.

P.S. the English dub is pathetic. I can only presume that Atari got random passers-by to record dialogue for the game. Be nice if there was an option to use the Polish dub with subtitles, since the domestic dub is usually far less crap than the localised ones.

@Chainsaw: ok, i don't seem to have experienced similar difficulties with switching the styles (i'm a rather obedient gamer - i play the way tutorials tell me to), but if that really is the case, you're right to be annoyed.

@Aurelyn: all i'm saying is i think the amnesia gimmick is a wee bit overused.
which is not to say i don't enjoy being Geralt, he's like the fantasy incarnation of Clint Eastwood.

fighting my way through chapter 2 at the moment. i have some longish (2-3 days) breaks in playing unfortunately, so i don't exactly play it lightning fast.
Spoiler:
the little salamandra investigation drags a bit, too - i'm just about to be making a postmortem on one of the bad guys, it should speed up from here.

plus, i really make an effort to see as much as i can and do as many (preferably all or almost all) sidequests as possible.*
what can i say after chapter one? awesome.
Spoiler:
the finale with the corrupt villagers vs the witch dilemma and the ghost dog showdown was totally gripping

i really felt (and it only gets better as the game progresses) that my decision's making an impact, and that's one of the best things about the game, the immersion factor is huge.

*and of course bang as many female npc's as possible.

Okay, so they've announced the release of the über patch, which should hack down the loading times and significantly improve both the game play and the game world. Finally they're going to fix "Die shit eater!". It's coming out mid September and should be free for everyone who already owns the game (and registers, which is a puzzling task for Canadians such as myself, since the CD-key required to register is nowhere in the Canadian manual).

Of course, you may have known this if you subscribed to the Witcher newsletter.

So okay. After all this time I finally finished Witcher 1. It was fucking awesome. As in, now second favorite rpg of all time awesome.

Now playing Witcher 2 (CE of course, with art book, stone bust and everything). It's more fucking awesome. As in, already well on its way to becoming favorite rpg of all time.

Strike Two!

As usual, I'll be a latecomer to the new game, but I will get there, oh brother, I will.

Interesting sidenote: did you know that the Polish edition of Playboy featured nekkid "photos" of Triss Merigold in this month's issue? That's some creative marketing for ya.

I haven't picked it up yet, I'll wait until I've finished the second Dragon Age.

I haven't been much of a gamer this year, but there are a bunch of games I'm curious about, like this, Mass Effect, Alice, etc.

Btw, the first boss is basically a giant Crayfish/Octopus hybrid.

And it's awesome.

If you saw the other screens you'd know I said it was dragged out by the sorceress. Who, by the way, I'm still not sure if I can get into her skirt or not. Won't stop me from trying though, even if he looks bad in doing so.

Just checked the Sunday ad, and it appears the Witcher is coming to Xbox, although it is the Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings.

Picking this up for the console Irish? Anyone else?

I'm having a hard time believing that the current consoles have the hardware muscle to handle Witcher 2.

Because IGN is such a great review site.

But honestly, I recommend getting it, but on PC if your rig can handle it.
And by recommend, I mean get it right fucking now. But don't let babby cfos see it. No, really. The opening cutscene isn't kid friendly.

Meh. Either way, I'm comfortable with my reply. I mean seriously for the interwebz are serious unless it is "you" typing. Wink

Unless he was referring to one of my kids in which case I retract my statement and offer a sincere apology ((typically, I refer to them as babygirl cfos #1 or 2), so I thought his comment was geared to me judging from our history. Generally, I already monitor what they see as any parent is sure to do) as I have already seen enough youtubes to know not to let them see it. In fact, that is part of the reason I never finished Mass Effect 2.
