Here is the sentence fragment (slightly modified):

"... between the response at the end and that in the middle of the time period, hence the latter was ommitted..."

To what is "latter" referring? "end" or "middle"? Usually, in a fragment like this I would say that the word that is listed second is considered the "latter" in this case "middle". However, being that the issue described is "time", could the author be thinking that the "end" is what is meant as "latter"?

Almost done with this manuscript. Aside from starting out the first sentence with 4 prepositional phrases, this phrase ranks high in the WTF? column.

"...were placed in another clear plastic cages..."

I would guess that the author meant the "middle of the time," especially if there isn't anything that's significant about the middle time. If there wasn't anything that made the end time any different at all from the middle time, then it would make sense that the end time is being omitted. But I'm just going on what you've given us so I'm gonna say the middle time is what is being referred to, unless you have some more of the sentence which would help to clarify matters.

Is this a paper you're reviewing? I hope for the author's sake english is not their first language. Otherwise they're handing PhDs out far too easily these days...

Edit: Phew, glad I spotted that mistake. That was close - I was nearly buried under a ton of irony there!

@ Ipsa, Yeah after rereading the manuscript several times (I edited it slightly when typing above) they are talking about the "middle".

@ Aure: They are Sal's countrymen and countrywomen. It isn't THAT bad of a paper... they authors just phrased things awkwardly and had an odd choice of vocabulary.

Well, the awkward phrasing is surely fair enough if you're writing in your second (or possibly third or fourth) language.

Oh, I agree. Nevertheless, editing is required. Typically, I would suggest that the authors consult a... what did I say... "... the authors should allow a reviewer experienced in English to review this manuscript...".

On a similar note, I just submitted a manuscript (#14). Elsevier has dramatically improved their journals websites making it very easy to submit.

Ironically, that post is completely correct.

Besides the lack of a capital at the start of it.

Sooo...Shouldn't the title for this thread be named "Grammar Nazis! Unite!" instead of "Masters?"

I honestly shouldn't even be in here. The Queen of Innuendo has no place among the Grammar Masters of this fine forum!

And by "Masters" I mean Nazis.

I'm faintly amused that one of the ads at the bottom of the page is "Writing A Essay".

So have I - I think right before I went:

"You're into what?!"

And probably then:

"Well, okay then..."
