Ok, so this is kinda movie-related.
The Wife enjoys all kinds of silly, unrealistic action movies (e.g. anything with Vin Diesal or Jason Stathum). As many women (and perhaps men in touch with their feminine side) will say, both of these actors eminate a sense of cool and are "hot" -- to use the parlence of our time. Here is what I find odd. These men have these qualities only in movies where they are bald. This seems to go against the stereotypes associated with going bald. Moreso for Stathum (sp?) -- "The One" was on TNT yesterday and I couldn't help but think that Jay looked like a pusss with hair. Also that other movie on Mars... I don't recall the title but it is a few years old and it was the Ice Cube version of Vin Diesal's Pitch Black. Again, Stathum had hair and not an ounce of "cool". As for Vin, the Wife doesn't even want to rent movies with him where he has hair -- the lawyer film and an early movie called "Strays". What say you, oh populance of alp? |

Hm. I can't really say that I've found either Vin Diesel or Jason Statham particularly attractive or sexy in any role. Cool, sure. But not sexy. Bleh. Does your wife find Bruce Willis sexy, too?
From the perspective of a female who rarely pays attention to such things, actors who can give off cool and sexy would probably be Christian Bale and Steve McQueen. They both have hair. _________________ "Yeast devil! Back to the oven that baked you!" |

Nah, the Mrs. doesn't care much for Bruce and hasn't seen the Die Hards. I think for her, the cool-ness factor of the roles contributes to the sex-appeal. Of course, they are also very fit gentlemen, too which I think has a sort of universal appeal to women. Part of it, I think is that she just likes the mindless action-y movies where you don't have to think.
I had to tell her who Steve McQueen was -- you know from that Sheryl Crow song...? I kinda thought it funny because she sometimes works on Ford cases and the new mustang was based on McQueen's. Additionally, Ford is releasing a special edition Steve McQueen Mustang and she didn't know about it.

As for Bale, I think the Mrs finds him sezzy in certain roles and repulsive in others (American Psycho, obvious reasons). I don't think he'd make it to the Wife's list because we saw him in The Machinist. It was a pretty interesting movie in a Memento sort of way. It may cause you to look at Bale differently -- as an actor (for he went Raging Bull for the role, albeit in the opposite direction) and maybe re-evaluate his sessy-ness.

I thought everyone knew who Steve was...! Though this Eddie Izzard clip on "The Great Escape" is one of the first things that comes to mind when Steve McQueen comes up. That and the Bullitt chase scene.
I liked Bale in "American Psycho". I've yet to see "The Machinist" (it's on my list), but his variety of roles is why I like him. _________________ "Yeast devil! Back to the oven that baked you!" |

@ Ipsa: lol. Yeah, the Mrs. knowledge on Steve is lacking, but she was able to recite the Yankees lineup at the end of the 90s.
The Machinist was a very interesting role for Bale. Shows his dedication to the role. I think he weighed under 100 lbs during parts of the filming. I think his role in this film made up for his poor, poor showing in the remake of Shaft. |

if i was a she, i'd be drooling over Gael Garcia Bernal. he's one sexy darkish sensitive latin sorta-macho-but-not-really kind of a guy.
if i was a she, that is.
as for The Future, as this seems more relevant, her ideal of the cool and the hot are Ewan McGregor and Ethan Hawke, so it's more toward the eternal-boyish type. well over 40 but still having the dreamy teen gaze.
and Chris Cornell of course, but that's a different story [oh the chest!] _________________ i have no time for anal love

The Machinist is a fantastic movie. Creepy, disorienting, and completely engrossing. It's the sort of movie you really have to sit and just watch. Then watch it again because you have to compare the subtle cues to the first time you saw it. A must-see psychological suspense thriller. SEE IT.
The most amazing thing about Christian Bale's commitment to this role that I read was that he lost 63 pounds to play Trevor in The Machinist, and he really does look like an escapee from Aushwitz. The next movie he made was Batman Begins, which required him to not only get the weight back on in a short amount of time, but to also improve his overall fitness and health in order to do what was required of him physically and look like he could be Batman. The man put himself through a severe shock to his system. His metabolism got all fucked up, his heart was put through enormous strain, but his brilliant and nuanced performance in The Machinist will, I think, stand out as one of his best roles. _________________ "I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use."

I once not-so-seriously posed the question to some folks I know, "Is it gay to work out whilst watching Pitch Black?"
Baldness is oft associated with being a tough guy (not necessarily a cool one, though). Maybe they're like some sort of reverse-Samson. I guess cfos' missus has a gay man's taste in men. Does she like The Rock as well? _________________

I think there are shades of baldness, though. George Costanza, though balding, isn't exactly cool.
No, not a fan of the Rock, to my knowledge. _________________ "If wishes were horses, we'd all be eating steak." |

This is a very good point. You rarely see a long haired dude as the main hero in an action movie. I guess it's not interesting enough to see the lead singer of a metal band save the world from emo terrorists or something. _________________

Actually, there is a video game in development that stars Jack Black as a roadie and somehow I think the plot is he saves the world. _________________ "If wishes were horses, we'd all be eating steak." |

Yes, but I was talking about a movie.
Meh, maybe they'll make a movie based on the book, based on the comic, based on the flash game, based on the webcomic, based on the art-work of the game. _________________

Where does Patrick Stewart fit on the list of shades of balding coolness? _________________ "Yeast devil! Back to the oven that baked you!" |

I think Patrick Stewart ranks as a lesser or poor-man's Sean Connery in terms of "coolness"/"baldness". _________________ "If wishes were horses, we'd all be eating steak."

Bite your tongue! Patrick Stewart is an order of magnitude cooler than Sean Connery! For starters, he can act... _________________ Da Fro-mastah of da aLp Forums!
