I presume a few people here have seen this. Watched it last night. Damn, what an awesome show. So utterly unlike any other Coen brothers movies and yet so distinctively theirs at the same time.

Yeah... Didn't get around to seeing it, but I'm looking forward to the release on DVD in March. I did read the book and thought it was quite good.

seen it finally. have mixed feelings actually. on one hand... duh! Javier Bardem was the coolest villain i've seen in a long time. plus Tommy Lee Jones who's like old wine, the other guy, the one who escapes with the money all the time (i don't remember the actor's name). all the acting was amazing, that for sure. and the gal who played the dude's wife, she was damn hot!
next, the feel of Texas the way it's shown, so... decadent. the no music thing, great too. the story itself, extremely captivating up till the climax. the anticlimax, in fact. which was in a way disappointing (as an anticlimax by definition should be), but after second thought, a nigh brilliant way of ending the drama.

the mixed feelings factor pertains to the denoument (sp?) part. in my humble opinion it was altogether dispensable, the movie should have ended right after the El Paso showdown. maybe after the meeting tween Tommy Lee Jones and the El Paso sheriff. this was a perfect moment to break it off without further ado.
to me, everything that went on after that point (and it was still some 20 minutes or so of action) just dragged on and was an unnecessary spelling out of the obvious things. the ending monologue also seemed rather out of place. i had the feeling that the bros lost creative self-discipline towards the end and simply did not know how to end the movie.
so the last "chapter" spoiled the overall effect of the entire movie a bit to me. and it's a damn shame because it really was on a good way to greatness.

but as far as best picture oscar goes, this is still a vast improvement over last year's The Departed.

I dunno, I really liked the ending, although I think it would have served their point better if Spoiler:

he'd died in the car crash as opposed to walking away from it.

You know, I only realised the music thing when somebody pointed it out to me afterwards! I was wondering why the whole film seemed so...still.

Gonna pick this movie up today on DVD. Looking forward to watching it. Read the book over Christamas and thought it was quite good. In other news, watched "Across the Universe". Was ok. Entertaining concept. "Michael Clayton" Meh. "American Gangster" meh.

You should really check out the book. The ending of the book really emphasizes the complete-ness that is Anton.

ok, so i guess i know now where the problem lies.
you say Chigurh is a "completeness" in the book - i thus assume he is a central figure in the whole book with much emphasis put on his character development.
so the problem as i see it is this: in the movie Chigurh really isn't the central character, and not even a fully complete character. he's this weird mysterious monster of a man, who is almost supernatural and somewhat inhuman in regards to his motivations and capabilities, impossible to kill, imposiible to hide from, etc. (btw, anyone else had a flashback to the 1st Terminator when Chigurh operated himself in the motel room, taking the bullet out and so on?)
we end up in fact with regular folks, people like you and me, caught up in a totally uneven match with a killing machine (erm, Terminator?).
and then, after the dust has settled and everyone played out their roles of the executioner and the victim, then they suddenly start to develop the character in the very last part, they try to show that the monster has some vulnerability as well (as in the scene that aure mentioned). to me - too late and too inconsistent with the overall picture of the character that permeated the movie from the start. make up your minds, gentlemen.

so that's my theory now, please correct me if my assumptions are wrong and then we'll try and maybe find a better theory.

Just finished reading Atonement, which I picked up after watching the movie. Great movie, great book.

Sal -- There is more detail regarding Anton in the book, although he doesn't have a "voice" so much as you hear a little more about him and the book doesn't have him just stumble off like in the movie -- you know what becomes of him. A great deal of the meat is told by the Tommy character. There is more sequence with The Brolin character and the chick at the motel that also sheds more light onto Llweylln (sp?). While I enjoyed both, if you've read the book, the ending seems a little rushed and I think that is the issue you are having.
