Funny they didn't play the one PJ song I'd know the title of (Alive).

@Sal: Shame the gig wasn't as good as you hoped it would be. I blame Linking Park. Well, actually I blame whoever convinced the boys that it would be a good idea to bring Linkin Park with them.

Did you know that the lead singer of Linkin Park (Chester Something), had his identity and everything stolen by a Native American woman working in some nuclear power facility in like Colorado or something? She was obsessed with him.

Well, congrats on your memorable moment and sorry Linkin Park kind of messed up your show. Oh well, Linkin Park's not too shabby either.

well, at least Chester-dude wasn't as irritating onstage as he was in this pirate movie he starred in with Johnny Depp and Keira Knightley. but he did have the same face expression throughout.

Tuesday June 26th, Marlay Park, Dublin

Who? Aerosmith, with Chris Cornell in support.

So what was it all about? A double helping of rock legend awesomeness in a dirty great big field with 30,000 other people.

So was it any good? Actually, I can say with certainty that this was one of the best damn concerts I've ever been to, and I've been to a lot. Chris is back with a new band and full of beans, and from his opening (Spoonman) it was clear he was gonna play whatever he felt like. We got some Soundgarden, some Audioslave, a bunch of new solo tunes, and even some Temple of the Dog. He was as good as I've ever heard him. For his last he gave the crowd what they wanted and played Black Hole Sun just as the evening was starting to draw in. Magic. And then came Steve Tyler and the boys and within a few minutes it was clear we were in the presence of rock gods. What an incredible showman. They might have been on tour for nearly forty years but they haven't skipped a beat. Their first encore was Dream On and I don't think I've ever seen a stadium erupt like that. Reckless. Joe Perry was also in flying form.

Most memorable moment? I had a couple. First was Chris' solo accoustic rendition of Say Hello to Heaven. His voice was properly warmed up by this stage and it was wonderful. Best Aerosmith moment was probably Joe Perry flinging himself backwards over the drum kit and getting Joey Kramer to play a solo on the guitar strings.

I saw Aerosmith live somewhere around '93 (or was it '94?) but I only have the vaguest recollection of their show. Whenever I try to remember what they sounded like, I keep picturing them playing Roxette songs like "Joyride" and "She's Got the Look" and I'm pretty sure they never did...

I really like some of their songs. Only that Diane Warren-penned horrorshow of a ballad "I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing" can drive me up the wall.

wow, man, i'd love to see Cornell in a set like that. 'cept he could skip the Audioslave part if you ask me.
and i think he could just bring Soundgarden back. i mean, if he plays the old songs anyway, why not play it the right way?

i'm surprised at what you say about Aerosmith, i thought they lost all steam long ago, judging by their latest studio efforts. well, maybe they keep saving it for the live shows, as this is what really matters to them. way to go.
did they dig deep into their catalogue or just do all those early 90s staples only (which admittedly would make for an amazing gig in its own right)?

@Sal. Man, if I'd closed my eyes during Jesus Christ Pose, I'd have sworn it was Soundgarden - his new band really made the effort to get the sound right - it was awesome. I'd have to admit I've a weak spot for a lot of Audioslave - Rage are a really tight outfit with some cracking musicians and Chris is a savage songwriter. Hard to go wrong, really.

Aerosmith played stuff from all their albums - all the big tunes, but also some of Joe Perry's songs, with Steve playing harmonica - ten minute guitar and harmonica solo at a live gig, unreal! As I said, one of the best concerts I've seen. I completely agree with you about most of their recent studio stuff though - kinda lukewarm.

yeah well, i was quite disappointed by Audioslave. i was obviously a fan of Soundgarden, and i really liked a lot of RATM stuff, but the two didn't blend together too well in my eyes. they had a great debut single "Cochise" but then went consistently downhill. all the time there seemed to lack something (presumably Zack De La Rocha's rapping) and Chris said himelf that they're too different when they split up, didn't he?

damn, after all you're saying, now i'll be hoping for Aerosmith to come touring nearby. that'd be something to hear Steve screaming "Walk This Way" live!

Friday July 20th, The Savoy Theatre, Cork

Who? Sasha

So what was it all about? A good dose of old-school trance/techno in a big ol' club with (unfortunately) about a thousand demented youngsters.

So was it any good? Well, Sasha's been around for ever, and he's a damn good dj, so the tunes were top-notch, although ever since I got into drum and bass <gets all misty-eyed for a moment> my taste in techno's gotten a whole lot dirtier. Bit too light and floaty for me. I had a good ol' dance though. Downside to the whole thing was the aforementioned demented youngsters (who'd have thought they'd even have heard of him?). Bless 'em, but they made the whole gig a messy, or maybe I'm just getting old.

Most memorable moment? There were a few great pieces of mixing, but I unfortunately have no idea what the tracks are called. Other than that, I had a long conversation with some guy that was convinced I was his brother pretending not to know him so he'd go away. It took me a good ten minutes to get loose...

Saw him at one of his "Sasha and Digweed" evenings in New York a while back ('99 I think). They were pretty okay, as far as I can remember, but funnily enough (having read your remark), the club had a drum and bass section as a sort of side party and we spent most of our time there. Don't remember the kid's name, but he was pretty good. DnB was still pretty new in America at that time and it was one of the very few times in my life I was about the best dancer in the room.

Oh yeah, Munan... you going to Lowlands again this year? Because if you are there is a really big chance you're going to meet me if you're going onto the festival terrain on friday night, seeing as I'll be standing at the entrance making sure you're not carrying any alcoholic drinks and providing plastic cups to put the alcohol in Smile

I'm afraid a certain girl has forbidden me to go to Lowlands.

As this girl is actually in some sort of a position to forbid me things, I'm not going.

Nah, I don't, really.

I don't think my girlfriend is aware of your existence.
Also, I'm not talking about her, actually.

It's a long and complicated story that is indirectly responsible for the introduction of the word "swaffelen" to this forums, lets just leave it at that, okay?

Lowlands Friday August 17

Who? Battles
What was it all about, then? Punkrock with the volume turned way up.
Memorable moment? The lead guitarist knocking his keyboard on the ground while doing spastic movements.
Any good? It sounded nice, but it felt improvised and chaotic. If the songs were more coherent, it would be cooler.

Who? Eagles of Death Metal
What was it all about, then? Music that will roxorz the boxorz of your coxorz.
Memorable moment? Finding out that it's more punkrock than death metal...
Any good? If you're expecting death metal, it sucks... but besides that it sounded pretty cool. I wasn't actually physically in the tent, but it was so close to where our tents were, I could hear it perfectly.

---------------------------------------
Lowlands Saterday August 18

Who? De Lama's
What was it all about, then? Improvisation stand-up comedy stuff...
Memorable moment? Practically the entire show was filled with memorable moments.
Any good? It's like my favourite dutch tv-show, and now I got to see them live... ofcourse it was good!

---------------------------------------
Lowlands Sunday August 19

Who? Lacuna Coil
What was it all about, then? Gothic rock with a really hot chick singing and headbanging.
Memorable moment? Seeing a shitload of people raising the evil horns of metal simultaneously.
Any good? Yeah, it's pretty cool. I wouldn't buy a cd or something, but they're cool.

Who? Motörhead
What was it all about, then? Do I really need to explain?
Memorable moment? Hearing Ace of Spades live and seeing a lot of people crowd-surfing while it's forbidden.
Any good? Fuck yeah!

Who? A Night of Comedy
What was it all about, then? Stand-up comedy
Memorable moment? Well, practically all the jokes the MC (who was from England) made. He also interacted nicely with the crowd.
Any good? I gotta say, dutch humor is inferior to english humor, but there was some good stuff there that made me laugh.

Who? Deathproof (movie)
What was it all about, then? Two separate pairs of voluptuous women are stalked at different times by a scarred stuntman who uses his "death proof" cars to execute his murderous plans.
Memorable moment? It was an outdoor theater thingy and it was pretty funny when some guy walked underneath the big screen and decided to moon us...
Any good? Totally, a nice addition to the Tarantino collection.

Who? Spinvis ("Spiderfish"), a guy mixing trip hop and rock into enjoyable, introspective songs with melancholic lyrics in Dutch. One of the best Dutch artists of the moment

What was it all about, then? Normally, Spinvis performs with a large band. This time, it was just him and his instruments.
This made it interesting, because I've seen him live a couple of times already, but now it was something different. He completely reinterpreted his songs, which made you aware of how good they actually are and how brilliant his lyrics are.

Memorable moment? Oh, a lot of things. The setting was quite intimate, with people sitting on couches around Spinvis while he played his songs. Also, only a limited amount of people was allowed to be there, since you could only purchase tickets together with buying his new cd.

But if I had to pick any moment, I cried when he played "What Did Alice Say again?", which has beatiful lyrics:

That the light in her eyes hurts her so much
That the dog doesn't come when she whistles
That actually she'd like to fall asleep already for a long time
Her voice is as thin as her skin
There's a raging rabbit in her intestines
And a stone with her name in my mouth
The terrified animal in her eyes
There is blood in the pot when she throws up

My corridors are dark from the inside
and Alice, what did she say again?
She's sitting at the window in the kitchen
It's early in the afternoon
She's sitting without dreams
And I'm standing left from the middle

Any good? Quite brilliant. You can see what I'm talking about here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kcp67tSfLRY&mode=related&search=

Friday October 5th, Savoy Theatre, Cork

Who? De la Soul

What was it all about then? Hippity-hop. Old school style.

Any good? Oh hell yes. I haven't had that much fun at a gig in ages. De la Soul were the boys that originally got me listening to hip-hop all those years ago and they haven't lost it. Audience participation to the max - at one point they had the entire concert rapping against each other, left to right. They pulled out all of their classics for us and had us screaming for more.

Thursday October 18th, Roundhouse Theatre, Camden

Who? Underworld

What was it all about then Several hours of that oh-so-unique Underworld goodness, played to a whol load of die-hard fans in an absolutely fantastic venue.

Any good? Fantastic. I haven't heard Underworld play live in nigh on a decade, and by god I've missed them. They were supposedly touring a new album, but although the new album is really good, it's a little laid-back for a live performance, so they mostly played all of their old banging tunes. No one cared.

Memorable moment? I think for me the best musical moment was the intro to Shudder/King of Snake. I nearly lost it with glee - keep in mind I was probably the drunkest man in London at that point. Funniest moment though was the inflatable light-tube thingies they had coming up around the stage (I will post pics as soon as I recharge my camera) getting stuck and having to be fixed, Spinal-Tap style. Brilliant.

Who?
The Dutch National Travelling Opera with Les Contes d'Hoffmann by Jacques Offenbach.
What was it all about, then?
Three stories by the German writer, composer and illustrator Hoffman were put together to form a bizarre opera. In the opera, Hoffman (whose works have influenced writers like Poe, Emily Brontë and Charles Dickens) himself is the main character. He's seduced by a mechanical doll and a courtisan is trying to convince him to sell his soul.
Memorable moment?
The resurrectionist walking around trying to sell body parts (especially eyes) who looked very much like the twins from The Matrix Reloaded
Any good?
Oh yes. At times it was a bit too clownesque (a recurring irritation in Dutch theatrical tradition) and the singing sometimes too artificial, but on the whole the libretto was witty, the compositions light but nicely done and the acting satisfactory. Bravo.

Who? The Boban Markovic Orchestra

What was it all about then

They're a Serbian brass orchestra. My previous experience of Balkan folk music was pretty limited, so I had no idea what to expect, but they were really rather good. I certainly haven't heard a trumpet played with that kind of skill in a long time.

Most memorable moment Realising that about three quarters of the audience were in fact Serbian upon noticing that they appeared to (a)Know all the words, (b) Be very drunk, and (c) get up and dance with the band. It was really rather surreal. Added a good old party atmosphere to the gig, I'll tell you.

Any good? Hell yeah, really enjoyed it. Won't be rushing off to buy any cds of Balkan folk music though, I'd say it's best live...
