yeah, i had a sneaking suspicion 
it's far too early for me to go around diggin up obscure b-sides and alternate versions. i reckon i'm like only halfway into knowing Bowie's major works. so far i got stuff from Hunky Dory thru Diamond Dogs covered, plus a bold probe into later times with Heroes.
i seriously need to get Young Americans and Station To Station asap.
then i will get to the rest of the Berlin period.
and now i see i need to get Space Oddity as well. and once i do, i cannot poosibly leave that The Man Who Sold The World slot empty.
man, why did he have to be so bloody creative?

I like the Pet Shop Boys remix of "Halo Spaceboy" very much. That one I listen to on an almost bi-daily basis, together with China Girl, The Man Who Sold the World and Ashes to Ashes.
Personally, I like the attitude and image(s) of the man more than his music, but he made some incredible songs. I have his Greatest Hits album and I really love to play that on a regular basis.
Also, I'm listening to Frankie Goes to Hollywood's "Relax" at the moment.

I'm kinda with Munan on this one - he's an amazingly cool guy who's written some absolutely brilliant stuff, but I think he suffered a bit from the same syndrome as Bjork, and (sorry Sal) Prince - poor quality control at times. One track will be fantastic, and the next won't do a thing for me.
The Greatest Hits gets around all that tho.

no need to be sorry at all - i agree. both with Prince and Bowie.
funny actually you should mention them together, coz i've been thinking about it recently and found them indeed similar in many respects.
(i'm not that familiar with Bjork, which is a shame, i know i'll get around to her music sooner or later, but from what i know it seems you're right grouping her with them).
the way i see it: both Bowie and Prince are tremenduosly talented. and theirs is the kind of talent that makes them insatiable in their creativity - they never cease to make music.
not every artist is like that. even not every great artist is like that. U2 takes 3-4 years off between albums. same with Pearl Jam. MJ in his absolute peak? - from 1978 to 1995 he released 5 albums. Prince had 16 in this same period!
and as for Bowie, most of his old classmates are happy if they come up with two albums a decade (Stones, Dylan). he never seemed content playing the rock dinosaur who ain't had anything fresh to say since early 80s. he's constantly making albums at the same rate (almost) as in the 70s. and the bastard is still seeking new styles.
now, i'm not of course putting equation mark between quantity of recorded material and its quality, that'd be nonsense.
but if you take Prince. sure, he recorded dozens of poor half-baked misconcepted songs, even entire albums of toss-away filler. it is unavoidable when you're so hugely prolific.
but he made hundreds of songs that range from decent to unbelievable (at least in my book, i know Munan uses some weird books  ).
so i guess you can say MJ had a better ratio of good to bad songs. but Prince had several times as many good songs as MJ.
i've no problem deciding which matters to me more.
and there is of course the ego factor. Bowie and Prince are beyond doubt, two of the most egocentric artists of our times. well, that surely influences their, as you put it, quality control.
we all know Prince is a self-lovin' sexy mf. we know Bowie came up with larger-than-life personas for himself a good few times.
well, what can i say, clearly if you become a fan of either, you go for the full package.
which is not to say i'll be hunting down every last one of Bowie albums, every last unreleased Prince remix of a b-side to a soundtrack album he recorded for his own birthday in '85. (i really wouldn't be surprised if he kept something of that sort in his closet).
i always aim at the good albums, the ones i want because i like them not because it says Prince on the cover (well sometimes it only says 0(+> ).
it's just that while i'm satisfied owning 3 Aerosmith albums (actually i'd like one more), i'll be only satisfied with 10+ Prince or Bowie albums.

Nice rant!
I think you've hit the nail on the head there, both about the egocentricity and the creativity. It definitely seems that the more you put out, the greater the likelihood is that you're gonna create a real gem. Bjork is the same, crazy little thang that she is - some of her albums are almost unlistenable to they're so out there.
Btw, if you'd like to get into Bjork, I would definitely say start with the Greatest Hits, and then after that, go with Homogenic (it's the album with All is full of Love on it). It's incredible. Vespertine is also superb start to finish. Unlike Prince, she seems to hit the mark with whole albums, and completely miss with others.
I'd probably class Madonna in with that, if you like that sort of music - an undeniable talent and also refuses to stagnate in style or image.
(In Pearl Jam's defense, btw, they average an album every 2-3 years at the least, and aren't you meant to be at a concert right now!)

i love All Is Full Of Love, i think it's a beutiful song. yeah, when the Bjork time comes to me i guess i'll need to ease myself in with the more real-song-singing albums. thanks for suggestions.
Madonna, hm, Madonna. well, she certainly used to be all about breaking new ground in pop, just like MJ. but she never truly stepped over the dance/pop backyard, did she? and she's grown quite complacent recently to my eyes. there's not much of that old re-inventing herself left now.
ok, let's agree that she too was the Bowie-ish kind of artist, on a smaller scale.
(and for the record it was 4 years between Pearl Jam's last two albums.)

I downloaded a file with albums from 10 various bands that were published in 1980. Some of it is good, but "Hold Me Tight" is not one of those

| Yes, there is a band named "Cracker". I think my favorite song by them is "Teen Angst (What the World needs now) which is what I'm listening to. I think a number of these band people were in Bachman Turner Overdrive (not to be confused with Kathleen Turner Overdrive *L*). |
