One of my favoite riffs ever would have to be "Bleak" by Opeth. The main riff in the first 3 minutes just swayed me so easily, that's what got me into Opeth.
Other riffs I loved are:
"Laid to Rest"- Lamb of God
"Lashed to the Slave Stick"- Nile
"Black Winter Day"- Amorphis
"Annihilation of the Wicked"- Nile
"Mein Herz brennt"- Rammstein
"Polyamorous"- Breaking Benjamin
"Back in the Day"- Megadeth
"Ahti"- Ensiferum
"Master of Puppets"- Metallica
"Iron Man"- Black Sabbath
"Don't Fear the Reaper"- Blue Öyster Cult
"Evil Angel"- Breaking Benjamin
"Six"- All That Remains
"Ruins"- Nile
"Eternal Wait"- Ensiferum
"Sleeping Stars"- Wintersun
"Into Hiding"- Amorphis
"Descending"- Lamb of God
"Rosenrot"- Rammstein
"Fade to Black"- Metallica
"Drowned Maid"- Amorphis
"Heart Shaped Box"- Nirvana
"Blow Me Away"- Breaking Benjamin
"Hero in a Dream"- Ensiferum
"Sweet Child O' Mine"- Guns N' Roses
"Mein Tell"- Rammstein
"Somewhere I Belong"- Linkin Park
"Mouth for War"- Pantera
"For the Love of God"- Steve Vai
"Redifine"- Soil
"Refuse/ Resist"- Sepultura
"Message in a Bottle"- The Police
"Zwitter"- Rammstein
"Floods"- Pantera
"Hey Man Nice Shot"- Filter
"House of Sleep"- Amorphis
That's alot of them.

Oh yeah. You have Nirvana on there. They have some pretty good guitar riffs. All thanks to Kurt Cobain, R.I.P. _________________

Yeah, Nirvana is a pretty good band, I'm not that into them though. But I also really loved "Smells Like Teen Spirit", "Come As You Are" and "Lithium". _________________ Only the strongest will survive.

| Interesting thread. I'm going to have to give it some thought. I will say that I think one of the best songs with guitar is "Dogs" by Pink Floyd. I have no idea how a guitar is made to wail like that. I also like the power chords in "Fade to Black" (Metallica) followed by the triplets. |

What makes you say that?
And cfos, I agree, "Fade to Black" had a very well made riff. That's why it's one of my favorite Metallica songs. _________________ Only the strongest will survive.

Mississippi Queen by Mountain. Cause fuzzed out blues guitars kick ass.
Few more favorites too.
Smoke On The Water by Deep Purple (I can't believe this hasn't been mentioned).
Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap by AC/DC. Has that down and dirty AC/DC feel
All Right Now by Free. The only up tempo song by this short lived Blues Rock band.
Man On The Silver Mountain by Rainbow. Awesome prog-metal medieval folk band.
Can't You Hear Me Knocking by the Rolling Stones. An underrated gem by the Stones.
Heaven and Hell by Black Sabbath. Tony Iommi is a GOD.
Jailbreak by Thin Lizzy. Gotta love those twin guitar harmonies.
Oh, and grunge needed to DIE before it started. |

@ Azrael.
I just meant that (a)it was very long, meaning that you'd obviously thought about it a while, and (b) I recognise only about half of the bands.
@Sal.
Munan was dissing the grunge? Obviously I missed that one...
@Smileypen.
Grunge isn't dead. It's just grown up. Which works out well, because so have I. _________________ Da Fro-mastah of da aLp Forums!

| I also have to give a shout out to the first riff by Steely Dan in their song "Reelin' in the Years". A frantic series of pull-offs (and hammer-downs... I don't remember...) worthy of Guitar Hero |

I actually just posted all this from the top of my head. I still have some more to add, but I think it may freak people out to see the list get bigger. _________________ Only the strongest will survive.

Float On- Modest Mouse
Helpless Automaton- Men At Work
Houses of the Holy- Led Zeppelin
Thunderstruck- AC/DC
Jessica- The Allman Brothers Band
None of this is off the top of my head, I'm just browsing my collection and picking the things I know.
FYI- When I play Jessica in Guitar Hero I start sweating profusely because I get so into it. _________________ "Gravitation cannot be held responsible for people falling in love." - Albert Einstein |

That one from Enigma on "I Love You, I'll Kill You" right after the bridge. Or is it the bridge? I have no clue.
Because it is an unexpected shrieking where there could have been just more of Enigma's New Age banlity in a song that stands out.
Dream Theater (American spelling) doing Dark side of the Moon. A little way into Any Colour (European spelling) You Like. They expanded and really nailed the mood.
Because it is such a familiar sound to me that matured. I was ready for it.
