Like the title asks, are you the kind of person who finishes a game, or beats it? For one, there's a difference between the two.
Beating - Beating a game is simply going through the main story. That means not finishing every side-quest, collecting every item, and doing something specific that has nothing to do with the main story.
Finishing - Doing EVERYTHING in the game. Includes collecting every item, leveling to 99/100/highest level, maxing out stats, beating every team successfully, completing every race before the best time, etc...
For me, it's finishing a game. My motto is, "Finish what I started." |

| Well, that's exactly what I meant by my posts not sounding the way they are meant, but whatever. If you prefer one meaning, then you prefer it. |

depends on the game for me really.
With FPS I like to finish the game, find all secret area's etc.
Also, with RTS games, I like to complete the game with each available faction.
However, with RPG games, this is different. I guess because RPG games usually take longer than previously stated games, and collecting all items, and finding every place with every available char you can make is just insane. For example, I wouldn't be able to level 1 char of each class in warcraft till lvl 70, let alone gear them up with decent stuff.
I just don't want to waste so many time, I'd rather do usefull stuff with the char I play most with. _________________ Back in action |

That's fine with me. I usually play my games with a solo character anyway. If it's a FF game, then I kill the other players. The only game I haven't done that on is FFX, because the annoying new rule of having 1 HP the next battle instead of staying dead.
The best game to go solo on is FFIX and FFXII... |

It's never the same with me. Some games I beat the one-player levels. Others, if they involve multiple playable characters, I only finish some levels or all levels with only a few of the characters. After a certain point it gets repetitive and boring playing through an entire game.
Although with God of War, I felt no such boredom, and the different levels of difficulty were more challenging and unlocked more extras. I can't wait until GOW II is a Greatest Hit so I can afford to buy it. I can't fathom a used copy of a new game selling for only $5 cheaper. $45 for an opened copy of a new game that may or may not work? Eff that! _________________ "I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use."

I always refered to them as the opposite as you had them here. Finishing implies that you just got to the end of the game. Beating, however, implies that you whalloped every inch of this game, making it squeeze out it's precious, precious secrets.

I don't know some games I finish and others I beat...
Beating means go everywhere, doing side quests, pretty much everything in the game....
I connsider Half-life series good enough to beat + Starcraft, and Doom 3
The rest I just finish, but it really matters how much you like the game to determine whether you'll beat it or finish it. |

Well, as Spawn used to say: "I finish what I start."
I think that's why I use the terms backwards. |

Finish: Complete main game-line.
Beat: Complete/master all gameplay.
You can't 'finish' Counter-Strike, but you can beat it.
In that case I beat all games hardcore. Easter Eggs FTW. _________________

I don't really have the attention span to completely beat most games I play - tend to lose interest after the game's finished, unless I really liked it. _________________ Da Fro-mastah of da aLp Forums!

Beating is more fun than finishing, because then you feel like youve accomplished something. Whats more fun, finishing Metroid Prime with 20% completion (just for beating the game) and getting a crappy ending, or getting 100% completion for the cool extra 9 seconds? _________________

There was a shower scene, I think, in the 360 version of DOA... not sure if it was 4... or whether it was the assassin chick's scene... _________________ "If wishes were horses, we'd all be eating steak." |
