|
|
so does anyone give a shit about Oscars anymore? i swear, each year the ceremony gets kitshier and kitschier.
it's unbearably forced, it's got nothing (well, almost) to do with evaluating the quality of the movies, it quit pretending to be authentic years ago, it's so predictable it crosses the border of ridiculousness.
and still, each year, i get drawn to the "ooh, who's gonna win this time?" frenzy. i learn the nominees, try to watch as many of the main contenders as i can before the actual thing, i go to websites (i honestly do) and check how many times this guy was nominated in the past, who won in the same category twenty years ago and so on. finally, i force myself to sit thru the ceremony (that's miiddle of the night in Poland) and go around sleep-deprived the following day.
guess that's some kinda habit of mine that i cannot kick. but do i even want to kick it? it's fun!
so anyways, Martin freakin' Scorsese finally got it. he looked so miserable during the ceremony i was ready to bet money that he would literally fall apart if he didn't get it this time.
well, he got it, and the moment his name was read out a huge sigh of relief was heard all above the Kodak Theatre. at last he can stop trying so hard.
the best part is that he didn't in the least deserve it.
sure he's a living legend, he's done great movies, three of which are among the best pictures ever done by an American artist - that's Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and Goodfellas (yes, De Niro starring in all of them), plus a host of decent others.
BUT The Departed is nowhere near the level! not even halfway there!
Hollywood sports some sense of justice. they should have awarded Scorsese back when he made his masterpieces. but they didn't. so now, when all he has to offer is some half-baked, half-hearted remake of a Hong Kong original (reputably better in all respects, but i ain't seen it yet), which screams DESIGNED FOR AN OSCAR in every second scene.
sure, at least it's better than Gangs of New York and The Aviator, his blatant attempts at an Oscar from 4 and 2 years ago respectively. so i guess that's something. maybe now he will leave Leonardo Di Caprio alone, the kid's done his job.
that's not how the whole deal should work. much better examples of director's work were dismissed because a bunch of hypocrites said "oh, let ol' Martin have it this time". Stephen Frears and Alejandro Inarritu both deserved it more, as they simply made better movies this year, but that's the sense of justice according to the Academy.
enough of that.
Helen Mirren and Forest Whitaker's Oscars were as well-earned as it can possibly get. it killed the suspense, but i can't have objections.
especially Mirren's performance in The Queen was close to perfection and there was no way anyone could beat her.
i really think they should have nominated Meryl Streep in the supporting actress category though, this way she could have got hers as well, but oh well, let's just give it to that black girl, what's her name anyway?, you know, the American Idol one. well, she was in the American Idol so she's got to be good, right? right?
unsurprisingly, Borat didn't get the script Oscar, but the mere fact that it was nominated at all was very pleasing indeed.
as for the host, Ellen Degeneres wasn't of course a match for the great Billy Crystal, but i must say i found her unexpectedly un-irritating. at least she had some idea for her hosting job, unlike Jon Stewart and Steve Martin who were painfully unimaginative in the same spot.
and finally, holy crap it's Randy Newman! i saw Randy Newman himself play one of the nominated film songs (the fact that the song was boring as crap is irrelevant). considering that i'm a fan, it was quite a highlight. _________________ i have no time for anal love

| I really don't give a shit about the Oscar awards. I just read who won what in a magazine whenever I'm bored at Wal-mart. |

I don't watch the Oscars. If I gave two shits about it, I would just go on the internet and find out. However, my tv time was forfeited because certain people living with me wanted to watch them, and then watch some lame British comedy show. Damn them.. _________________

I stopped watching the oscars about ten years ago.
Actually, even when I DID watch them, I only watched the last hour just to see Best Director and Best Picture.
The real irony is that I'm a filmmaker myself. Go figure... |

What, the anti-christ as in the coming of James Cameron will herald the end of all days? What'd he do? _________________ Da Fro-mastah of da aLp Forums!
