amen on all fronts.
Bono used to be the man in the 90's.
most badass, extravagant, and most importantly always wonderfully tongue-in-cheek rockstar in the world.
he was the postmodern star.
and the rest of the band followed, the 3 albums they made in the 90s were all astonishing, Zooropa being probably the aphex of their wild imagination.
man, i miss those days.
now it's U2 Lite.

That's four albums:
Achtung Baby, Zooropa, that Passengers thing (brilliant!) and Pop.
Also, the Million Dollar Hotel soundtrack was pretty amazing. I remember I was a little down on my money at the time and I was having All that you can't leave behind in the one hand and that soundtrack in the other.
needless to say, I bought the latter and never regretted it. It played a substantial role in me having sex with a lovely biomedical engineer once.

ah, you're counting the Passengers thing as their album. my bad. i admit i never heard it all, Luciano Pavarotti sorta puts me off. but i'll get to it eventually.
as for Million Dollar Hotel - totally! a marvellous piece of work. even if it didn't contain "The Ground Beneath Her Feet" (is it overreacting to claim it The Last Great U2 Song?), it would be more than worth having for Milla Jovovich's rendition of "Satellite Of Love" and most of all, Tito Larriva's half-mexican/half-unintelligible version of "Anarchy In The UK".
needless to say, you made the right choice. teh secksy time you had proves it.

It's not overreacting, I think it is true.
They should work with Salman Rushdie as a lyricist more often.
It would definitely mean less God and more postmodernism in their texts!
And yes, that's a good thing.

well, Bono was a good lyricist himself back in the days, capable of irony and smart wordplays as well as some quite insightful reflection.

yes, i decided to revitalize this drool-over-the-old-u2 party, because it's fun and i like to drool.
*which reminds me. i once heard bono say in a concert that everything they ever done they ripped off Lou Reed. that's too much of course, but it sure is a striking istance of paying homage to an idol. it's nice to find that a superstar of Bono's format is capable of something like this.

Oh yeah, I actually was present at the Zoo TV European tour, in Budapest to be precise.
And there was this instance where they played "Satellite of Love" and Lou Reed suddenly appears on the big television screens they had on that tour and sings along with them.
And for sure Bono (together with the Edge as an editor) wrote some of the best lyrics in Rock and Roll. Even on their last album some of the lyrics were very strong.
They have detoriated sharply since Pop, though.

Oh, and why I think the nineties was a great decade: Dave Grohl. Who else has played so many musical instruments (voice included) successfully with so many different bands (more than just Nirvana and the Foo Fighters)? Joshua Homme comes to mind, but he didn't get the head start Dave Grohl got with Nirvana.

what i find the greatest contribution to music by Dave Grohl is his appearance as the Demon in Tribute To The Greatest Song In The World video.
nah, i'm joking, he's pretty talented, especially for an ex-drummer.

you've seen Alice In Chains together with Layne's needle puncture marks...
