Ever wondered where that name came from?

Why, it's from the absolute fucking best band in the entire bloody history of pop music.

It is. Really. Fucking pop brilliance at its best.

Ravers, burners of mony, sacrifiers of sheep (why sheep?).

I am of course talking about the KLF. Also known as the Timelords. Occasionally active as 2K. Furthermore known as the JAMs.

I am of course talking about the artists forever known as the Justified Ancients of Mu Mu.

Discover the truth of the real discovery of America in the year of our lord 992: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6bU2GUc8_A

See the rites of Mu here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDhZUY4rqSM

They also made a very cool song with Tammy Wynette, prooving they really are and forever will be the untouchable emperors of pop music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGsu0ZKlx8Y&mode=related&search=

(please note that where any other smart pop group would just have combined Tammy Wynette with a cool urban beat. The KLF added sheer brilliance in the form of a rapper shouting not only "Bring the Beat Back!" but also "To the Bridge Now!", some stuff about an ice cream van and if that weren't enough (it would have been by far) the sentence "fishing in the rivers of life" as well!!!!!!!!111!!!twoomgwtflmaobbq!!!!111!!!222).

Oh. And as it happens, they also burned a million quid.

Watch them doing it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5mNzOtm24I

I actually knew about the band before reading this. Do I win something?

The KLF is one of those bands that has music videos much better than the actual songs. Not to say the songs are bad, but still. You know what I mean.

Are they better than even Journey, who Randy Jackson of American Idol played bass with for just a couple years.

Burning money isn't genius. Giving it to me is! I is want my moneys now!

Burning money might not be genius.

Making an artwork with a million pounds nailed in piles of 10.000 with 9 inch nails to a large piece of wood, calling it an artwork, getting frustrated that no gallery wants to exhibit your artwork because they can't pay the insurance, then burning it on some remote island of the British coast, filming it, showing the film to audiences of miners who just lost their job in the north of the UK asking them "why did they do it?", then burning the film but continuing to ask large audiences that question, then writing a contract not to talk about it anymore for 23 years on an old car and then pushing the car off the cliffs of the northern coast on the other hand...

that is genius!

No. It probably means you're quite old as well, though.

Well, you know, if they never published any music worth listening to, they'd still be a lot more interesting than most bands. As it happens, their music is really very, very good. But maybe it's an age thing. That is the music of my generation, man!

Well I should.

And I'm not old. I'm not even twenty.

Oh sure, blame it on age.

I kinda found myself screaming "What time is loooove" when watching that video back there. I so do not have the voice for this.

i remember the name from the old time, i think my older bro used to listen to them, but i never really heard the actual music.

"The Rites of Mu" - i waited for 2 minutes until i realized it's no gonna become music. not impressed.
"What Time Is Love" - real good. love the guitar sample.
"Justified and Ancient" - yep, that's very good, although it suffers from that staple early 90's flaw - those superfluous rap parts pasted into an otherwise good song. man, this shit can even spoil Prince for me.

i don't see the art factor in a bonfire of money, but i appreciate the fuck-you value of the stunt.

anyway, weren't Pet Shop Boys the best fuckin band in the history of fuckin music?

I dunno about genius... perhaps, an expression of nihilism (not necessarily the rejection of religion per se, but some of the other daffynitions). Then again, who am I to decide what constitutes "art" which is a completely different beast.

Actually, that's the thing with all their songs. They make you scream senseless things like "what time is looooove", "Ancients of Mu Mu" or, as in the following, equally brilliant song 3 A.M. Eternal, "KLF!! AHA AHA!!!"

You're just not "getting it". Rapping about Ice Cream Vans and Fishing in the Rivers of Life can never be superfluous. And Prince worked with some very good rappers (love the ones on Sexy MF).

It is genius - in the sort of rambling, mad, slightly unsettling way the British can express genius in their art. cf Lewis Caroll or Syd Barett.

that's primarily Tony M., the rapper member of the New Power Generation band.
"Sexy MF" is a must-love. mostly because it's His Royal Badness himself rapping the verses, but yes, even the Tony M. part is one of the better ones. hell, it's one of the best Prince songs evah (which automatically makes it one the best songs evah, period.)

my whining referred rather to the unnecessary raps in songs from "Diamonds And Pearls" album, like "Daddy Pop" and "Push" and "Live 4 Love" and of course the ghastly "Jughead".
the rap on "Willing And Able" is kinda cute, however.

oh, but there's also a bit earlier "Alphabet St." with a superb rap from Cat Glover.
so there's better and worse, as always.

huh. Good point. I don't think I had thought of it as such. Then again, I don't listen to Ummagumma much.

I really want to join this conversation, but maybe I'm not old enough. Or bold enough. I just, I got nothing.... But I do like British people.

Well, you could say that watching "The Rites of Mu" made you jump outside, dance around a burning totem, worshipping your moderator.

That would be a valued contribution, trust me.

Also, no, there is no Syd Barett on Ummagumma, but there are songs written by Syd on the live part of that record. As a contributing artist, Syd is only present on The Piper at the Gates of Dawn and Saucerful of Secrets

The Pandaman has lost his life again, and so he thought that Munan might like a change of avatar pace that didn't involve freaking out the sexually insecure.

In a way it was.

In another way, it had much to do with the allignment of the stars today.

The rites of Mu will be performed again someday and today was a sign pointing towards that fulfillment of the Prophecy...

Oh, here's a cool video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b86XvrVrJ0o&mode=related&search=

Let me see if it contains the necessary ingredients to make it a "very brilliant music video":

- Someone shouting that "this record was produced by the artists forever known as the Justified Ancients of Mu Mu"... check
- very brilliant music...check
- two elderly men with rhino horns driving around in a weelchair...check
- a preacher in a golden suit grabbing his crotch and sprouting foul language...check
- Someone doing something with an axe... check
- plucking of a swan...check
- a prayer for "those in peril on the mighty seas"...check
- shots of people in peril on a mighty sea...check
- a brass band...check

Science has just proven this video to be 'a very brilliant music video'.

Laughing Awesome... I'm off to get myself a motorised wheelchair and a rhino horn. And an axe. And a revised hymnal. Not sure what the swan was about though!
