Who do you think are the greatest guitarists ever? What work have they done? What style of music do they play?

For me, my choices are:

-Van Halen ('Nuff said)

-Steve Vai, he can play like 30 notes a second

Jimi Hendrix because he was black.
Frank Zappa because he was weird.
and Jimmy Page because i used to be a Led Zeppelin fanatic in high school, and this leaves a sentiment.

oh oh, and Eddie Hazel, because he was black and he played in Funkadelic.

I love the way The Edge has made *pling* and *plong* do so much work for him.

It's that making very little go a very long way that makes him the greatest guitarist for me.

In my book, delivering a great *pling* followed by a even greater *plong* and taking 10 seconds if necessary beats "30 notes a second" any time.

Man, I can't even digest thirty notes a second.

amen, guys like Steve Vai or Yngwie Malmsteen can give you nausea.
they're so absurdly good that it starts bordering on ridiculous, and the music gets boring.

The Edge is absolutely the man, but as for quality-over-quantity axemen, my pick would definitely be Dave Navarro. he's so great he could make even RHCP sound good!

My favorite guitarist would have to be either Brian May or Stevie Ray Vaughn. Or Jimi Hendrix. Or about a hundred others I can't think of right now.

you're in a band? what do you do? make sure that the lyrics go off-topic after the first verse?

big applause for our guitar player... our drummer... bassist... and for our off-topic supervisor, we would be nowhere without him!

I was going to say Prince too. He's lots of fun to watch and you wonder where he comes up with the stuff he does. Actually no, he's the only person/personality his music could come from. I'm not knowledgeable much on other guitar players but my roomate could play No Quarter and actually make it better.

okay, found it.
Prince Acoustic Guitar Ownzor (and quite a showman too)

edit: this if you still have doubts, he's not unwinding it till 3.30, but it's worth the wait
(there's also an edited version, but it's not of as good quality as this one)

i think i might be falling in love with guitar solos again.

Prince is good. So is Kyle Gass, great on accoustic. And you're right. Steve Vai is fucking brilliant. They made the guitar just for him. But nauseatting to hear? You can't take the sound then. But it's not just the speed of how he plays, it's also the new sounds he made with a guitar. He controls himself very well and accurately, and makes sure each note comes down clearly, even if it will get drowned out by his next pluck.

But another guitarists; I'd say Jimi Hendrix.

Best EVER: David Gilmore (Pink Floyd)

Classical: Alex de Grassi -- Listen to "The Children's Dance". Utterly amazing

Noteable: Jimi Hendrix, Walter Becker (Steely Dan), Nick Drake (he kept it simple), Pete Townshend (The Who).

Let's talk about guitar solos now.

November Rain by Guns N' Roses is "wow".

Jimi Hendrix - the man personifies the origin of true blues-based rock and inspired an entire generation of rock gods.

Tony Iommi - every single metal guitarist owes him for inventing every solid metal riff EVER. All else are simply reworkings of his stuff.

David Gilmour - he proves that you don't have to play a thousand notes in a measure to get true depth and feeling out of a block of wood with strings on it. A master of technique and melody. His solos create authentic emotional repsonses in the listener.

Eddie Van Halen - he was the first true rock guitar virtuoso. The two-handed tapping and use of natural and artificial harmonics are his babies.

Andrés Segovia - the father of modern classical guitar. He changed the guitar from a plaything for pop music and elevated it to a classical instrument on the level of a piano or violin.

that's Jeff Lynne, of Electric Light Orchestra.
they're good buddies with Petty, they wrote a lot of stuff together, and they're the ones that came up with the Traveling Wilburys idea - a folk-rock's supergroup including Petty, Lynne, Dylan, Roy Orbison and indeed George Harrison. that's why they're there, playing Harrison's song.
btw, you noticed the young guy that looks like George's clone? that's his son.

also, someone said Nick Drake. i concur wholeheartedly.
probably the best as far as acoustic guitar goes.

edit: i watched the SRV thing. i can't deny he's a wonderful player, but...
i can't really put my finger on it, but there's something about him that just doesn't convince me.
maybe it's his determination to be like Jimi. he even dressed up like him.

About.com recently posted Guitar World's list of the 100 greatest guitar solos of all time (complete with tab!). Any list like this is gonna be met with cries of "BULLSHIT!" all the way through; that's a given. That said, here it is, have at it.

Interesting list (top 100) -- Not sure I agree with the order, but I do appreciate the solos listed.

P.S. My bad on the spelling of Gilmour in the previous post. My apologies. I also think that his solo off of Dogs from the Album Animals is, undoubtably, his best solo.

I'm not surprised for several of them. In fact, I had already read this 3 weeks ago. But now, I'm finding Metallica my favorite band again. So Kirk Hammet has really brought himself up on my list. For doing all those amazing guitar solos. Although Stairway to Heaven has one hell of a solo, One has become my favorite.
