Here's my number 10.

10 - The One - Jet Li kicks ass! Especially his own! Which, in this movie, he really does!

And if I could choose more...

11 - Rush Hour II - Jacki Chan and Chris Tucker! Woo!
12 - Monty Python and the Holy Grail - You got to love the giant bunny.
13 - Predator 2 - Hmm...
14 - Spider-Man2 - With Great Power... Comes a Great Ass-whoopin ability!
15 - Around the World in 80 Days - Again, man. Jacki Chan.
16 - National Treasure - F*cking brilliant! And no hostile swearing! Which, in some cases, is a bad thing...
17 - I, Robot - Will Smith, plus the future, plus some kick ass robot named Sonny is sure to get on my list! (I don't know if I spelled the robot's name right.)
18 - Ghost in the Shell - I just like it. What??
19 - Spirited Away - Again, I just like it.
20 - Alien 3 - I love it! I can't believe it's so underrated!

1. Alien and Aliens (both are tops)
2. Empire Strikes Back
3. Apocalypse Now
4. MP Holy Grail
5. Excalibur
6. Boxing Helena
7. Super Troopers
8. Starship Troopers
9. Clerks
10. The Last Starfighter

I left out my personal hell movie, Blackhawk Down, only because it probably only ranks with those of us that were there.

Wait, you were actually in the military, and you didn't think Starship Troopers sucked massive green donkey genetalia?

Hmm.

I was never in the military, I read the book several times, and I thought it was one of the most inane, creepy, infantile movies I ever saw.

The friend I went to see it with agreed with me that we didn't hate it because of how it distorted the book, since it was so far from the book that we didn't see any real resemblance.

But, sending infantry up against giant creatures with no air cover, no armor support, no body armor, that was hard for us to swallow.

Also the way they bunched up the ships later in the movie, making it easier for the long range enemy bombardment to score hits.

The fortress deep in hostile territory with no cavalry support.

I mean, it was like there was no consideration of military rationality whatsoever.

Dang, now it seems like I am attacking you, the new kid on the block.

Sorry, I don't mean to. I just felt the military/combat weaknesses were the worst part of a movie that left a bad taste in my mouth.

Do you mind discussing this with me? If you do mind, sorry I have been such an ass.

I agree with you on the military suckiness part. I mean, how long have they lived at peace, but knew about the Bugs? Why did they not develop better weapons? A simple Minigun would probably be better against those things than those fully automatic Moritas... I mean, it took them several seconds with a group of soldiers to take down an Arachnid... just take something like a tank with you... it would've been better for the economy to send them in with butterknifes...

Many scientists openly admit to watching Star Trek before they go to bed. Shouldn't they be offended by Star Trek's lack of any scientific rationale, or even consistency?

Some movies are meant to be entertaining, not representative of real life. The image of a team of armored warriors running headlong into the enemy horde to kick ass and chew bubblegum is generally supposed to be entertaining, no matter how preposterous the idea would be in the real world.

In fact, movies of that type aren't called 'escapist' for nothing, they're supposed to let the viewer relax and relieve themselves from the worries of day-to-day life, troubles, and frustrations, and enter a world where whatever seems cool, is cool, and works.

Yeah, that's exactly why I like so many movies... sheer entertainment...

You are just funning me, right pandaman? I mean, you aren't seriously lecturing me, are you?

The thing is, the people who went to see Starship Troopers, the geek brigade who was waiting outside the theater to see the first show on the opening day, weren't looking for light entertainment. They were looking for a movie made from a Heinlein novel. And they were, as a group, seriously disappointed with the weak shadow they found in its place.

People who were looking for light entertainment might have been the target audience some dim-witted studio executive (yes, redundant, I know) thought he was shooting for. That would explain why the movie was such a flop.

Instead of making a movie Heinlein lovers wanted to watch, they made a movie almost no one wanted to watch.

Apologies to Zephon.

Doogie der SS Officer didn't help matters any.

Wait, leetle teensy light bulb goes off.

Maybe the only people who liked it were members of the military. And maybe they all did. I seem to recall some retired general giving it a very good review.

Hmm.

i think what truly drew me into this movie was the absolutely horrific military. from the very first guy at the processing center who had no arms or legs and was so proud to be infantry to the boot camp DI who throws knives through your hands to the very idea of a nuke-headed rpg. it was such a parody of the regular military that i loved it. i don't know that the movie makers were going for that particular thing, but that's how i took it.

then there is the underlying theme that humans take their superiority over any other form of life for granted. once again, mankind dismisses a race based on the idea that they are "stupid" and about has its ass handed to him. social commentary at it's finest.

or maybe the movie really was just a violence/gore/hackfest with no redeeming qualities that i projected some onto. if that is the case, it was kinda brain-numbingly dull.

sarcastic or not, it was still pretty damned silly and also makes you wonder exactly who was it that took his arms and legs? apparently it was the training that made him into the man he ended up being. because we always train with live rounds. well, we do sometimes, but only in heavily restricted environs.

I think a previous encounter with an Arachnid got him like that. Just like Rasczak... Ratcheck... the teacher with the missing arm dude...
