Earlier today, 24/08/2006, the IAU announced that Pluto would no longer be a planet under it's new definition, but a 'dwarf planet', thus ending debates world-wide since it's discovery in 1930.

Charon is Pluto's satelite. Satelite = moon. It always was a moon and always will be.

Yes, quite a few. That is the stated reason behind the new designation.
There are many objects out in that region of the solar system that have the same characteristics as Pluto. If Pluto were to be considered a planet, all those other objects would also have to be considered planets.
The choice became:
Pluto is a planet, and so are all those other objects;
or
Plutoe is not a planet, and we don't have to add a whole lotta buncha other objects to our list of planets.
When it is stated that way, the choice seems obvious to me.
So we gonna be adding objects to the list of "dwarf planets" for a looooong time, is what I be thinkin'.

I just read that the part of the definition of "planet' that Pluto specifically was said to have failed was ...and has cleared the neighborhood around its orbit.
This is extremely bizarre and ironic, because, since the orbit of Pluto crosses the orbit of Neptune, Neptune has not cleared the neighborhood around its orbit.
So, by the logic the IAU used, apparently Neptune is not a planet either.

A dwarf has a normal-sized body, but shortet than normal limbs.
A midget has limbs and body in proportion, but smaller than normal.
So, dwarf planet or midget planet? The questoin rests on the proportions of the limbs.
Anybody got a picture of Pluto's limbs??

Well, the word "astronomer" really only means "star namer," so if they are trying to name planets, or other celestial objects that aren't stars, they are exceeding their authority anyway.

Actually, because Pluto's orbit is inclined by 17 degrees, its orbit never crosses Neptune's. People say it "crosses" because at its perihelion, Pluto is closer to the Sun than Neptune. If it did, however, Pluto would either have been captured by Neptune or thrown out of the Solar System long ago. |
