Aren't you 14?

Don't be talking about what happens when you are 40 for a few more years please.

I turned 40 four years ago, and I am NOT old, thankyouverymuch.

The fact that I have less hair and move more slowly and need glasses to read and am thicker around the middle is not an indication of either age or deniafication.

Nope.

Definitely not.

Uh uh.

Not in any way at all.

Oh, and Aramor. Needliing conveys what you were trying to convey, exactly. =D

I'm just glad Complex Numbers is so old. Then I don't feel so bad about being 31.

Dappy Hirthbay. 19 to me has meant nothing for the past month. It's the last year you're a teenager though, so make it good.

Hey ComNums, when does your life start flashing before your eyes?

Nah, no one I know of needs my permission to do anything. And by reading that, 4 years may come by any second now...

At birth. And it doesn't stop until you're dead. This is what the scientific community technically calls "living".

well, science is always good for finding out things that man is not to know. like what it feels like to be sucked through a hole much, much smaller than an atom.

I haven't read all the posts from this thread (just page 2) and it kinda made me laugh. For me, 34 is around the corner. After reading this post and suffering from incurable procrastination... I thought I'd write a bit:

"But I know more than I'm supposed to know, considering I'm one of those smart yet isolated teens. "

I had this question:

If you are so smart, and young, have you set up your 401K? *L* Just kidding-- I'm not sure what state you live in and you may not be eligable for a job with retirement benefits... just yet.

But, the sentiment is accurate: I think that the sign of getting old is all about thoughts of retirement. The day you become old is the day when you know the exact amount of $$ you need to have saved/earned in retirement in order to retire at the level you would like (accounting for inflation, market fluctuations, etc., of course). Feeling young and acting young is all about personality and not about being old. Thinking differently, or talking about non-age appropriate topics doesn't make you "old", it makes you mature (or not mature as the case may be if you are old) which you can occur at any age. Being "old" means going to the doctor for more things (and some things you don't want to know -- i.e. Men's prostate exams, additional perscriptions because your body doesn't secrete enough of this or that, knowing SOMETHING about your cholesterol levels). It means the body doesn't recover like it used to -- i.e. Your entire body aches for 3 days after a pick-up game of basketball or softball. You don't get enough sleep because of work and family. You have a gym membership but you skip it weeks at a time for life-related circumstances. You move (out of state/country) for work. You support yourself and others and spend time thinking of the future (theirs and yours).

Personally, I would say you may be mature, but you are not old. Here's an experiment you can try: Fall down. Now, measure how long a simple fall, twisted ankle or wrenched back you get from reaching-around-to-the-back-seat- for-a-cd-while-driving takes for you to be recovered. At your age, I'm sure you just get up, check if you are bleeding and then forget about it. Try this experiment in 20 years.

If you don't want to risk injury (or don't have time to wait 20 years), another experiment could be: Chronicle the number of things you have to do that you don't want. I'm not talking about homework; I'm talking about things you do when you are old: Go to job-related functions with a smile on your face (believeable) after working overtime without compensation. Watch as people far less-skilled then you (or spouse) get promoted because they fill a "demographic" or for political reasons -- then go back to work with the same smile on your face. Go for a stretch where you work every day (personal reference: This Thanksgiving is the first *holiday* since last Thanksgiving that I didn't work). Now do the same, except accompany your spouse to his/her event. Listen to your spouse/children about something contrite and appear interested and ask intelligent questions. Forgo things you want to do because of work/family interests. Shop for a good mortgage rate. Calculate your monthly income -- this is something EVERY old person knows, often months in advance including calculations for future expenditures. Ask yourself when your metabolism changed and why you can't eat like you used to. Recall things from the past that are unheard of today (smoking on a plane; making a mix tape *cassette*; waiting for the latest song to be released on a 45 (do you even know what I mean by 45?) a time before cell phones and cable/satellite tv; LEGALLY driving without having to fasten a seatbelt; counting the number of fashion trend you've lived through).

Sure these things will change for you as they do for everyone, but you can define your cohort now and reflect in a few years. Consider yourself old when you have answers to these, or have developed your own list of arbitrary items.

"well, science is always good for finding out things that man is not to know. like what it feels like to be sucked through a hole much, much smaller than an atom."

Speaking as a scientist.... you are a little off. (Government-funded)-Science is always good for finding out how much shit you are willing to take before giving up and taking a lower-paying job that you are overqualified for. It isn't about atoms, unless you are applying to NSF which can't compete with the majority of funding agencies under the umbrella of NIH. Of course, I'm not sure that NSF grants are funding above the 7%ile, so I think in the current times, my defination for what science is good for is more appropriate, if not entirely too jaded.
