" (I'll release you if you promise not to run.) Scar grunted, waiting for her brown eyes to lock onto his.

For a few moments, they held a staring contest, which Rave watched from the sidelines with great interest. At last, Lex turned her gaze away. She didn't forget what she had found the last time she had stared into those amber eyes. It was something she didn't want to find again, though she knew that NOW she definately couldn't disregard the fact that they were somewhat intelligent. Scar, on the other hand, found himself relieved she had looked away first. He, himself, had gotten slightly uncomfortable staring into her soft brown eyes. And he knew Rave would never let him live it down, what with the big brute watching it all and everything.

Taking that as her consent, Scar reluctantly relinquished his hold.

Without missing a beat, Lex kicked the Yautja's feet from under him and darted away. Hitting the ground with a curse, Scar was on his feet less than a breath later, sprinting after the fleeing soft meat. It wasn't much of a chase as Scar leaped into the air, landing solidly on her back and ending it quickly.

Finding herself sprawled on her stomach with Scar actually sitting on her back, Lex let out a defeated sigh. As if she believed for one moment she could have gotten away that easily. From the looks of things, the two Predators seemed to have been tracking her. But why? She had given his mask back AND his gun.

Sending a dagger-like glare at Rave, Scar demanded, (Why didn't you stop her?)

Inspecting his claws nonchalantly, Rave replied, (It looks like you have things under control.)

"Will you get off?" Lex made a demand of her own, twisting her head to half look at the armored Yautja sitting calmly on her back, "I can't breath."

(I told you not to run.)

"No." Lex corrected, "You wanted me to promise not to run. I didn't promise. AND I did not just run. I took you by surprise and THEN ran."

With a growl at her tone, Scar whipped his head to send another glare at his bigger companion.

(She IS right.) Rave said with a shrug.

Scar sighed aloud in his ever-growing exasperration. Why was he stuck with these two again? Oh right, because the Yautja was one of his childhood friends and the Ooman was the one being in the ENTIRE universe Rave owed a life debt to.

(Unbelievable.) Scar mumbled, rolling his eyes.

As Lex lay there, struggling to breathe, she decided to take matters into her own hands. Feeling Scar's weight shift slightly on her back, Lex took advantage and hooked her leg through one of his. Before anything could be done, Lex flexed her abs and leg muscles and twisted with a burst of movement. Much to the Yautja's surprise, Scar soon found their positions reversed. Now HE was on the bottom and SHE was the one sitting on him. Scar wasn't sure who's maw was gaping wider, HIS or Rave's.

Scar blinked, looking up to find an equally surprised gaze on Lex's face, (Wha- Why did you just...) But words seemed to fail him at the moment. Did he just get bested by the Ooman female?

Straddling his stomach, Lex leaned forward, a smirk replacing her astonishment as she realized what she just did, "I NEEDED to breathe. I did tell you, remember?"

- Scar, Lex and Rave (a.k.a Celtic) in Chapter Eight: No Other Way of 'Scar, Friend Or Foe?' "

Random bit from a Scar/Lex AVP (AU) fanfiction that I showed to a friend in an attempt to try and get her to like the Scar/Lex pairing. (Scar and Lex: Because killing Aliens Together Equals True Love)

There's some buzz going around about the PS3 possibly "curing cancer", so by popular demand, I thought I'd lay the facts out fairly simply for everyone.

In fact, the official Sony podcast contacted me today to help explain the Folding@Home system for next week's show. It will be available through the PSP content pack and Playstation's RSS feeds. However, that got me thinking that more people should understand how it all works, so I thought I'd put a sneak preview up on GR.

It all began back in 1995 when a University of California, Berkeley group helping SETI (the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) was always running out of computing power. They were trying to analyze billions of intergalactic radio signals looking for patterns that indicated intelligence. Alien TV broadcasts, if you will.

One of their researchers realized that there were millions of personal computers sitting around in people's homes doing nothing for 16 hours a day, so he made the world's nerdiest screensaver. Called SETI@Home, when you computer was idle, it would contact SETI, get some data to analyze, and send the results back. Still the largest "distributed computing" project, they got better-than-supercomputer performance for free - all in the name of science.

Fast forward to 2007, and Stanford University has a program called Folding@Home studying complex protein behaviors called "folding". Someone has the brilliant idea to create a PS3 version and a deal is struck with Sony to put it right in the PS3's operating system (1.6 or later). You can find it in the "Network" column.

I'm going to simplify here - a lot. If you think of a human cell as a factory that makes cars, proteins would be the employees, robots and machinery that do the work. Now if a protein isn't "folding" right, it's not doing it's job properly. Sometimes thats not a problem, but say, for example, what if the robotic arm that installs the steering wheel is putting it in the trunk instead? You end up with a very bad car that will crash and cause other problems. Problems like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Mad Cow disease, and even cancer.

The problem is that these proteins are far, far more complex than a robotic arm, and can "fold" in timeframes measured in billionths of a second. It's like trying to solve a million-sided Rubik's cube while it also spins at 10,000 RPM. And that's for just one "fold".

Once you acticvate Folding@Home, when you leave your PS3 idle (and it's online), it will contact Stanford University and be given a protein problem to solve. You can even watch it fiddling with a 3D representation of the protein in real time. Once it's finished (about eight hours) it sends the data back to Stanford. Very cool.

So I urge all of you with PS3's to activate Folding@Home. You even get points (they don't do anything) for helping out. I just created a team for Game Revolution that you can join - team number 72437 - and then I set GR's office PS3 working away on a particularly intractable protein that I call Steve. The PC teams have a big head start, but what the heck. (To join a team, hit triangle and go to "Identity")

So while Folding@Home is not actually curing cancer, it is helping to put together some very complicated pieces in the puzzle of carbon-based life. We can't say where it will lead, but knowledge is always power.

One way to obtain finer-scale data is to employ a point-electrofishing procedure, at points spread evenly across transects placed across the habitat. When a fish is captured, the position it was first sighted at can be marked with a numbered float or other marker. If a high voltage is used with a small (approx 10cm) diameter anode, both the fright bias and positive galvanotaxis associated with a larger, more diffuse electric field are avoided, and much more precise habitat use data can be gathered (Maki-Petays et al., 1997; Maki-Petays et al., 2002; Maki-Petays et al., 2004).

Oh, the thrill of it all...

I don't think he is. It's exam period over here in the Netherlands.

Lol, Munan's quote...

And damn, that first word (recontextualisatie) is a real tongue twister...
