Why are aliens black but start off white at 'birth'

well i read that the aliens were created by the space-jockeys, you remmber, the big thing sittin in the chair of the derelict ship, but anyways they were artificially made,s o the colors are likely coded into an aliens genes, they can be bluish, reddish, greenish, even gray, whaterver the hell the space jockeys wanted .but end up being a black mixed in with it, but remember this, the chestbursters had some slight color changes in the movies, like my avatar, this may have an effect on the color of the adult

Ok, the first half of your post I already knew... then when you said they could be any color I kinda lost ya, but no biggy.
Anyhoo, the chestbursters don't really vary in color I think. They are all light brown-ish... the one in your avatar is simply covered with blood...

well they do vary in color, slightly
the one in Alien had feint green highlights, which is hard to see cause of the blood
the one in Aliens was very pale
the one in Alien 3 was kinda tan
the one in Alien Ressurection had light splotches
and finally the one in AVP was a bit green, besides the one that had its neck snapped
but they all grew into adults with different colors from each other, obviously from ther chestburster forms
