It just hit me that not everyone may be familiar with the haiku form. To make the lives of those folks who still want to join in the contest a bit easier:
1. A single poem of three lines, complete in itself; no series (in spite of the meaning of the word haiku!).
2. 5 syllables in the first line, 7 in the second, 5 in the third.
3. No rhyme structure.
4. No titles, explanatory lines or dedications.
5. Includes some apsect of nature compared or contrasted with an aspect of human nature to make a point.
1 and 2 have to be true for the poem to be a haiku; without those two things going on, it isn't haiku. Even in modern haiku (which is still written as a serious art form in many languages), 3 and 4 generally aren't broken. 5 is traditional to haiku but is broken often in modern ones; for this contest, it's probably right out the window considering the subject matter.

Heh. Thanks. I had my suspicions, but now I KNOW my haikus are crap. Now I'll do a better one.

I went up and had a peek at the ones a couple posts back - they only need minor tweaking to fit into the form, so you didn't do so badly

Looks like you even stuck the nature rule pretty well with those - nice job I like the second better because it does less telling what it's about - a feature of Japanese haiku that can only be imperfectly done in English because English is a far more direct language.

AK's scan out fine on a quick check; as I said, the really formal rules aren't likely to apply here, considering the subject matter we're dealing with. Though you could very easily argue that Bernie's saying a lot about human nature through non-human creatures, so why not?
