Canada does get some things right.
New York Belongs to everyone. I left the midwest to live in New York for a summer, and thats all I could come up with to explain it. New York belongs to everyone who is there.
Profound I know, I am moving there ASAP _________________ The door swings both ways |

Seems like NYC city (especially L.E.S) these days is a breading-ground for college grad hipster yuppies drunks. In a couple of years then will get married and move to the Suburbs and a whole new generation will be replacing them. _________________ stupid people do stupid things, smart people out smart each other. |

| Shinitra wrote: | Speaking of... how many NYers have actually been to the Statue of Liberty? Broadway show? Empire State Building? etc? Just curious. Of all the friends I had up there, none had ever done any of the touristy things. Just curious if that's pretty much a universal thing, or if my friends are just lame. |
Let's see...I hit the Statue of Liberty many years ago with my family but for whatever reason we couldn't walk up to the top that day due to some reason or another. I took a lot of pictures at the top of the Empire State Building last year or so since the lines were incredibly short, the prices were reduced, and, hey, I had two hours to kill.
Broadway shows? Plenty. There are tricks to getting tickets to shows that are "impossible" to get as well as ways to get tickets for stupid low prices if you know what you're doing. A few friends of mine have gotten last-second tickets for random shows (some of them top-tier) just by being at the box office on a slow night around 10 minutes before performance. I think they paid around $30 or so, maybe $40 for the two rather than $140. That's pretty nice, considering. As for "impossible" shows, let's just say that there's a great difference between what ticket sellers say that they have online and available, what they say they have available over the phone, and what the box office itself has to say. Check often enough and it's even possible to grab a ticket to, say, Spamalot for a performance later on in the week.
The same also works for some sporting events if you play your cards right!
And now I'm going to lose my seats at these events because I have to fight with you people. Oh well, more of the NY Experience, then! |

I've never actually been in the Statue, but the Island itself, sure.
I've been on the Empire State Buidling twice, once for a school field trip, and the second time for an evening date to view the city in it's bright neon glory.
I vaguely remember the Twin Towers, that was also a field trip.
Broadway yeah, the Producers by Mel Brooks, pretty funny.
Anyway, if anyone would like to get a sense of what the scale of Manhattan is like, play the new Spider-Man games, like Spider-Man2 the movie game, or Ultimate Spider-Man, where in both games you get to freely roam the city, and aside from the few fictional buildings and toned downed details, is pretty sweet. |

(One of my friends in NYC sent me this...it's so true. At least from what I remember from living there for 2 years...)
1. THERE IS NO NORTH AND SOUTH.... IT'S "UPTOWN" OR DOWNTOWN." ....AND EAST OR WEST IS "CROSSTOWN."
2. YOU'RE 35 YEARS OLD AND DON'T HAVE A DRIVER'S LICENSE.
3. YOU RIDE IN A SUBWAY CAR WITH NO AIR CONDITIONING JUST BECAUSE THERE ARE SEATS AVAILABLE.
4. YOU TAKE THE TRAIN HOME AND YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHERE ON THE PLATFORM THE DOORS WILL OPEN THAT WILL LEAVE YOU RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE EXIT STAIRWAY.
5. YOU KNOW WHAT A "REGULAR" COFFEE IS.
6. IT'S NOT MANHATTAN; IT'S THE "CITY".
7. YOU CROSS THE STREET ANYWHERE BUT ON THE CORNERS AND YOU YELL AT CARS FOR NOT RESPECTING YOUR RIGHT TO DO IT.
8. YOU MOVE 3,000 MILES AWAY, SPEND 10 YEARS LEARNING THE LOCAL LANGUAGE AND PEOPLE STILL KNOW YOU'RE FROM BROOKLYN OR THE BRONX THE MINUTE YOU OPEN YOUR MOUTH.
9. YOU RETURN AFTER 10 YEARS AND THE FIRST FOODS YOU WANT ARE A "REAL" PIZZA AND A "REAL" BAGEL.
10. A 500 SQUARE FOOT APARTMENT IS LARGE.
11. YOU KNOW THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN ALL THE DIFFERENT RAY'S PIZZAS.
12. YOU ARE NOT UNDER THE MISTAKEN IMPRESSION THAT ANY HUMAN BEING WOULD BE ABLE TO ACTUALLY UNDERSTAND A P.A. ANNOUNCEMENT ON THE SUBWAY.
13. YOU WOULDN'T BOTHER ORDERING PIZZA IN ANY OTHER CITY
14. YOU GET READY TO ORDER DINNER EVERY NIGHT AND MUST CHOOSE FROM THE MAJOR FOOD GROUPS: CHINESE, ITALIAN, MEXICAN OR INDIAN.
15. YOU'RE NOT THE LEAST BIT INTERESTED IN GOING TO TIMES SQUARE ON NEW YEAR'S EVE.
16. YOUR INTERNAL CLOCK IS PERMANENTLY SET TO KNOW WHEN ALTERNATE SIDE OF THE STREET PARKING REGULATIONS ARE IN EFFECT.
17. YOU KNOW WHAT A BODEGA IS.
18. SOMEONE BUMPS INTO YOU, AND YOU CHECK FOR YOUR WALLET.
19. YOU DON'T EVEN NOTICE THE LADY WALKING DOWN THE ROAD HAVING A PERFECTLY NORMAL CONVERSATION WITH HERSELF.
20. YOU PAY "ONLY" $230 A MONTH TO PARK YOUR CAR.
21. YOU CRINGE AT HEARING PEOPLE PRONOUNCE HOUSTON STREET LIKE THE CITY IN TEXAS.
22. THE PRESIDENTIAL VISIT IS A MAJOR TRAFFIC JAM, NOT AN HONOR.
23. YOU CAN NAP ON THE SUBWAY AND NEVER MISS YOUR STOP.
24. THE DELI GUY GIVES YOU A STRAW WITH ANY BEVERAGE YOU BUY, EVEN IF IT'S A BEER.
THAT'S NEW YORK, BABY! _________________ "SUPERMAN HATES MILK WITH THE FIERY INTENSITY OF A THOUSAND SUNS!"

There really is no north or south. Manhattan is actually positioned diagonally. The top points northeast. Maps just rotate it up and down so its easier to view. _________________ "You have to quote from books to look clever. You can't quote from films. Definitely! I remember when I moved out of NYC, back to Baltimore, and my mom helped me unpack my clothing. And she asked me why all of my clothes were now brown, grey or black. I'd dare say easily 85% of my wardrobe is still just those three colors, with some muted blues and greens when I'm feeling daring. _________________ "SUPERMAN HATES MILK WITH THE FIERY INTENSITY OF A THOUSAND SUNS!"

That's how New York City's always been like.
NYC is full of energy. I'm a person that likes quiet, so NYC is just a place for me to visit for fun and go to school, definately not live in. I can't take all the noise pollution, crowds of people and lack of foliage.
And nothing on the dollar menu is actually a dollar. _________________ "The time for talk is over. Now we must kung fu..."

That ways alot about NY already.
I've always wanted to go there. I want to see the pathetic attempts of mugging people will try to do to me. I'll kick their ass, and when they go: "Who the hell are you?! Your no New Yorker!", I'll go: "No, I'm from the West side of the states!", and then they'll freak out and run.
That would be cool... _________________ Only the strongest will survive.

Ah... stereotyping... What makes you think that:
A. you will be mugged
B. your proposed mugger will speak to you in English?
More likely, you have a greater chance of being run down by a rollerblader (with no harm intended -- you were just in the way)
I miss livin' on the East Coast. Was a tri-state area resident up 'till I finished college. Now, I try to get back once a year to catch a game and a show. Otherwise, the closest I get is seeing the Metro North route backstage on the SNL band stage. Regular coffee. Entenmenn's cookies. mMmm |
