i just got asked a really tough question by a friend..
if you, your spouse, and your child were on a canoe, and it flipped over.. and only you knew how to swim and were able to save only one other person ...
which one would you save? your spouse or your child?
and NO SMART-ASS ANSWERS. you have to pick one or the other.
yes, i like thought-provoking questions not asked in classes. kthnxbye. _________________ Yours Queen of Cloud 9

"Is it on the ship?"
"You mean my baby?"
Which rather begs the question about Ripley's position in this moral quandry - should she save 'the kid'? _________________ I may be synthetic but I'm not stupid

Meijin:
Engage in your intellectual masturbation elsewhere. You typed so much, and yet you still did not answer the question.
Great use of sources, though! [/sarcasm]
Just for the record, I am not some anti-intellectual. I have no problems with a longer-than-average treatise or diatribe, so long as they address or critcize the issue properly. That was just a case of "let me write every little thing which vaguely relates to the issue at hand."
Oh, lest I also be guilty of the crime of not answering the question, I would have to go with the child. _________________ Context is everything.

Just to be anal, remember that Aristotle is the ancient philosopher that was used for a great deal of Christian logic (e.g., Thomas Aquinas is sometimes said to have Christianized the writings of Aristotle). This isn't to say that others, such as Plato, weren't, but it's mostly Aristotle.
But anyways, an answer. My initial reaction is, "If they're going down, I'm going with them." That isn't an option here. So I would save my child.
Smart ass reasons, because I can't resisit: More insurance money on spouse. Child is considerably smaller and more compact than spouse. Great source of guilt for use during child's development.
Reason to save spouse: Need some more damned quiet in the house; children are loud. Can always have more kids; what's the loss of one? _________________ "Yeast devil! Back to the oven that baked you!"

The question is pretty lame seeing in real life the person (or me w/e) would try to save them all by swimming as fast as I can and good lord if my children dont know how to swim I will be REALLY dissapointed. _________________ Cogito Ergo Sum....Bitch.

Ah, just ignore the details then, metal. This is simply a test. If you want, you can change it so that somebody will shoot either your spouse or your child, or something along those lines. _________________ Context is everything. |

I'm sorry, Meijin, but I tire rather quickly of those who type much and say little. If you are going to avoid the question, you can at least have the common decency to do it in an amusing fashion. _________________ Context is everything. |

Ok, smartass answer: I wouldn't save either of them... my little scheme to get rid of both of them has worked... mwuhahaha... MWUHAHAHAHAHAHAhum...
Ok, probably my real answer: save my spouse and die trying to reach the kid, so I won't have to spend my entire life feeling guilty about not being able to save the other... _________________

Well as the only one so far that has one of either, not to mention one of both, I'd have to say Spouse, because I think it'd be harder to find a way to go on without her.
But THANKS for making me go through that in my head, Khushi! You're the best!! <3 |

I thought I already replied to this, but I guess not. Well, I'd probably have to go with the child. I know I have neither a spouse nor a child, but if my girlfriend were to have a kid, she would never forgive herself for not being able to save our child. So, if I saved her, she would be miserable all the time. It's a tough choice. I wouldn't want to live without a spouse, but I wouldn't want to save her just because I'd miss her. I'd want to do what she'd want me to do, and I think that'd be to save the child. Who knows? haha _________________

Serious answer: I would save the child since he has all his life ahead of him while my spouse would have a already spent part of her life. On another note one of the main purposses of life is to perpetuate it's self and pass on it's genes and thus the child would be again the firs choice.
Smart-ass answer: Since I Telveryon Redralusissur (the hole name of my uberchar) I can just summon a red dragon and have him save both or eat them both depending on witch action brings me the most profit. _________________

i'm not married, i don't even have a girlfriend, and i sure as hell don't have kids, but i know the answer to this one, i'd save the kid. even though i don't have kids i get the feeling that my maternal instint would kick in hardcore.. judging by how i treat pets (kitties).
unless, i hated the child. i don't know how that would happen, and i don't think that it would, but i'm not going to pretend that i can predict the future here.
and it would also take a long time for me to give up on my spouse.. i'd definately try to save both until it became painfully obvious that it wasn't going to happen. sad times. _________________ organic chemists do it naturally |
