I have a basic personal rule that I try and follow. I think it applies here (I'll admit that I break it on occasion, so no need to point that out)

A polite person never speaks about politics or religion because you never know who you're going to offend.

Yeah, that's one of those mom-rules. Smile She tells you at 13, you roll your eyes. 20 years later, you realize she was right.

My mom's variation was more like "Don't argue politics or religion," but the same general idea, and for the same reasons.
