Hello everybody!
A little over six years ago, I posted a thread "Last day at shitty job", where I announced that I'd quit my job as a communications assistant to accept a new job as a teacher and researcher. Part of that job was writing my PhD thesis, for which I got a five year assignment. Well, it topk me about a year longer than that because I had to replace my supervisor during her sabbatical, but three weeks ago I submitted my thesis. Don't congratulate me yet - I'm still waiting for the verdict of my comitee, which could be negative, but that's rare in the Netherlands once you've got this far.
Anyway, during that time, these forums have been a nice distraction, especially once I became moderator. And even though they're not as active as they were six years ago, I thought I'd share this with you guys - those of you still around... _________________ The Justified Ancient of Mu Mu |

Its nice to see that you're still alive! I'm still around even though I don't post as much. It is kinda sad to see the site get into such a lull but that's life I suppose. We're all growing up and doing our own thing. I do miss it though...This site was the very first forum I ever joined and my love for everyone here is still strong. I'm getting a little weepy-eyed just thinking about it! Please don't call me a pussy for that...
But I am happy to see that you're back and I wish the best for you man. I'm sure you did great.
Also...FIRST TO WELCOME MU-MU BACK! _________________

I'm feeling something warm and fuzzy but I'm not sure we're talking about the same thing. To be honest, I don't exactly know what I'm talking about.
Anyway, congratulations on the whole thesis thing. Seeing as it's something I could probably never pull off, I take my hat off to you sir! _________________

I probably owe a lot to joining this forum. It was the second ever I've been on and was pretty young at the time I joined (and kind of an internet douche). It's the only one I regularly visit these days (this and the first I've ever joined) for a reason I've never given much thought toward. The community here has been ridiculous at it's been intelligent - I've not seen many others like it. Other forums' communities are either just plainly a bunch of asshats or are way too goddamn serious/strict. Congrats on making it this far, hope for the best. |

Oh I'm feelin teh luv, I'm feelin it!
Seriously though, congratulations on that major breakthrough in your life, Munan, and thanks for sharing the news. God knows there's been some major breakthroughs in my life that I've shared with this here dignified Community over the years.
Regarding the state of our union, believe or not but this is still the first site I open every day, even though the forums are more or less running on life support these days. And that's giving me all kinds of warm and fuzzy sensations that I'm not sure I want to discuss right now. _________________ i have no time for anal love

Well, if we're sharing anyway... I was a very active member of a serious Muslim forum before I joined this one, and it was a huge relief. I immediately fell in love with the atmosphere, the ridiculous RPG-ing (anybody remember George?).
My job back then was really a joke and I spend quite some time here while in the office.
Later on, as said, it was a lovely distraction from teaching and researching (I always was a bit worried one of my students would find out about my silly antics here). During the tough break up with my girlfriend and the mad years that followed, I always enjoyed the fun moments I had here.
I think becoming a moderator was what kept me in the forums.
And yes, the forum is a bit on life support these days, as Sal phrased it, but I think what is amazing is that it is still active, that aparently a small group of people (probably also for the sake of fond memories) bother enough to keep coming back here after all these years. Because, you know, 8 years is an eternity on the internet, and that goes even for the six or so years that most members of the group that is still posting here every now and then have been here.
As a matter of fact, I used to laugh at the idea of being "friends" with people that one knows only through the internet, but I guess there's a few of you that I would use that moniker for - or at least acquaintances that I'm quite fond of. Some of you are even Facebook "friends" of mine, despite my rule to only accept people I've spent time IRL with. _________________ The Justified Ancient of Mu Mu |

Congrats. Do you have a defense to prepare for? If so, good luck.
I could probably parrot much of what has already been said, too. _________________ "If wishes were horses, we'd all be eating steak." |

Guys, guys! Don't congratulate me yet - academic superstition says that's bad luck before the comitee has reached its verdict *shifty eyes*
But thanks anyway ^_^

Awww. I'm feelin' the love! Good to have you back, Munan. Yeah, this is in fact the first and only internet forum I've ever joined. I first signed up when I was chained to my desk for long periods during my PhD and I was immediately struck by the warmth, intelligence and humour of most of the active members - it was a very welcome diversion during a tough coupla years. Since I've finished up, I haven't been posting as regularly, but it is still one of the first sites I check when I go online, principally because there are several here that I would consider friends, despite never having met them irl, and I would be sad to lose touch.
I have given a lot of thought over the last while to how the forum could be taken off life support - though I suppose these things go in cycles. I'd guess that a lot has to do with teh B not updating the site so often any more , and also moving the episode comments section off the board and on to the front page; not so many new people coming by. _________________ Da Fro-mastah of da aLp Forums!

I myself only come here because after so many years, it's just my regular routine to come here and hang out with you stubborn bastards. And I wouldn't have it any other way.
Oh btw, as the local Forum Lore Master, obligatory link. And yes, you were completely right. Naive and silly. I was 15. _________________
