No, you can play either DA. I have the first one for the 360. Tried playing it but the graphics kept reminding me of Two Worlds. Also, I felt the dialogue, though good, was far too much. I felt like I spent 20 minutes reading for every 3-4 minutes of game play.

I'm feeling like picking up Dragon Age after all. Do I need to play the first one first to be able to play the sequel, or are they two separate stories/experiences and I can just go straight for DA2?

They are basically two separate stories. Two separate kinds of stories even. The first was a Lord of the Rings style fantasy epic and the other is... well I don't really know actually since I haven't yet dove into DA2. The scope of the plot in the second is apparently much smaller than the first, and it is influenced somewhat by decisions made in the original, though not in any drastic way.

Whether this turned out good or not, I dunno, since I've only just finished my DA:O run and still have to do Awakening. Origins is a looong game. It's comparable to The Witcher actually at around 50 hours or so and, as cfos noted, isn't the most well paced game in the world. But I'll say it's worth it. I still prefer Mass Effect and The Witcher though.

If you get DA:O though, be sure to get it on PC. It's not very friendly controls- or graphics-wise on the consoles. The sequel is apparently better in that regard. You also might as well just go for the Ultimate Edition on Steam.

Also, DA:O is a buggy mess on my system. I don't know if that's because of all the mods I've loaded onto it but in CPU-intensive areas it tends to stop playing nice with the steam overlay and starts having texture hiccups that trash the stability of the game.

@Sal. As Simon says (see what I did there Razz) they are two very different games. I'm not quite finished 2 yet, but I definitely prefer the first - I would highly recommend it. The scope of the story in the second is much more limited, the background is more limited, and I'm not a fan of the interface - they stripped it down for the console market and I think the game lost much of its charm as a result. I'm personally a big fan of very dialogue-heavy RPGs, which is where I think DA2 has lost some of its appeal for me - it's much more action-heavy. As a side note, apparently Planescape:Torment has more dialogue and description lines than any other game ever made - over 900, 000 of them.

Thanks a lot, doodz, now I know where I'm standing.
@Aurelyn: I'm also much more interested in characterization and dialogue than in combat, so I think I'll follow your advice.

One other thing I'll add about DA:2 -- I haven't played it, but I believe you are limited in character selection. I think the Dwarf and Elf option may have been removed -- I'm not entirely sure, but that was the rumor I heard about 2. As with Simon, I preferred Mass Effect. Of course, I've only played this on a console and that may be why I felt "whelmed" by DA:O.

Thank god I don't have a console - helps keep things simple.

On the strength of the X-Men rush that First Class gave me, I got X-Men Legends 2: Rise of Apocalypse. Much, much fun. I only wish they made Beast a playable character, not just an inventory guy.

Deus Ex and Crysis. Btw, yes, my PC can run Crysis now. Max settings. 1080p. Still smooth as butter.

Brb, gotta deal with the singularity hovering outside my window.

Huh. I did a search and it seems as if those posts are just... gone. As in deleted.

I don't know why. It wasn't even off-topic.

I got nearly a page of garbage error messages the other day when I submitted a post. Maybe the database has been corrupted? Although that doesn't explain why only the one thread was affected.

^I've yet to actually even touch the thing; I've played once and that was the demo nearly a year ago (or whenever it came out). It's currently in the poor "bought but won't be played for a really long time" stack.

Not that I'm lacking any interest in it in particular, just... gaming at all at the moment.

I hope I'll be finally playing Arkham Asylum soon. Been waiting to try it out since... since it came out basically, but I've been waiting for the price to come down. I'm such a cheap little sonuvabitch.

Playing Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood now. Always been a huge fan of the wild west setting. God, I wish they could release Red Dead Redemption for PC at last.

On that note, been playing Red Dead Redemption again. We finally bought an HD tv, so now it finally looks like it should. I think I'm almost finished with the main story by the way.

Yes, I know, everybody else finished it years ago. Well, I rarely completely finish a game, since halfway through I get a new game and start playing that.

With the exception of the Fallout and Killzone games, finished those multiple times.

Vampire the Masquerade - Bloodlines

I was a big fan of this when it first came out back in 2004, despite it being one of the most bug-ridden pieces of software I'd ever seen. In the years since, patches were released to deal with these, and then a pretty fanatical community stepped in and created several gigabytes worth of mods for it overhauling the game mechanics, adding a whole load of stuff and generally making it the game that Troika probably would like to have made had they had the time and money and weren't going bust. Anyone interested check out this site.

Playing Red Dead Redemption again, trying to get as much Trophys and stuff before I play the last mission.

Also, bears suck.

Just picked up my copy of Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Man, after the disappointment that was Invisible War, this had better be good. It certainly looks the part...

@Oirish: It's good. Damn good. Just be prepared for the boss fights. You can't run away from them and they can be damn tough to kill.

@Simon. My goodness, it is really good. Really really good. Right from the opening level it felt so similar to the original that I immediately forgot about Invisible War. Loving it thus far. Unfortunately, my ATI Mobility 5470 is groaning under the strain of trying to play it. It may be time to bite the bullet and get a new graphics adapter. Decent mobile cards are pricey enough, but it's probably worth it in this case.

Deus Ex is my first experience using Steam - is it normally this unstable? I'm getting booted out by the client a couple of times an hour, which is getting pretty annoying.

That's... not supposed to happen... Are you getting any error messages?
